JENYER (JIYOON) – DAY AND NIGHT
Tracklist:
1. I Do
2. Magnet (Feat. Olltii)
4minute alum Jiyoon, now going by the stage name Jenyer, has dropped her new single album, 'Day and Night.' Featuring two tracks, the album contains the title track "I Do," and rapper Olltii guests on the hip-hop track, "Magnet." Jenyer is actually her fandom name, so it's interesting that she chose that as the name to debut under.
The title track is "I Do." It's an okay song, but it's nothing special. It's a slower mid-tempo track hewing close to ballad territory, and not really my thing. However, what I can say about are two things: 1) It grew on me the more I listened to it, and 2) The vocals are fantastic. Over the years, she's really grown as a vocalist, and her new label coaxes some beautiful soaring vocals out of her on this one.
"Magnet" is the second track on the single album and probably the stronger of the two tracks. Jiyoon has a beautiful, breathy voice on this track, and she drops into a fiercer rap when it calls for it. I always felt she had the chops for hip-hop despite her performance on 'Unpretty Rapstar,' and she more than demonstrates it in "Magnet." However, I didn't feel Ollti's flow or rhythm -- his contribution was extraneous to an otherwise decent tune.
To be honest, I've been waiting for this for a while, but I was hoping for more. Jiyoon is a lovely, talented young lady that deserves the best. Maybe they can set her up with more hip hop type tunes next comeback.
I wasn't the biggest fan of the music, but it's the MV where Jiyoon really shines.
Featuring a landscape as majestic and sweeping as the song, Jiyoon walks through expansive, beautiful places, like beaches with extensive, rolling tides, verdant forests, and even hedge mazes. It's definitely a spectacle, with a bit of glowing CGI to draw the eye.
I really like the way they set this up. I'm a fan of fantasy landscapes, and this has them in spades. It's great how she's a stranger in a strange land, wondering at the costume changes instead of completely at home with them. It just adds a nice, stylistic touch.
The only thing I might complain about is Jiyoon's hair. First off, I love that it's long. But rather than looking healthy, it looks limp and heading to gray. Maybe she really is going prematurely gray, but you can cover that with a good dye job. The mane she's sporting in this MV is anything but flattering.
And yes, I really do think this MV is a work of art.
