The Jeonju court of law in Korea sentenced a 33-year-old woman to a 5-year sentence for killing her child while trying to commit suicide inside her home. All of the jury members agreed that the killing was intentional and that the mother should take responsibility.
The crime occurred back in March when the woman lit coal inside of her house in order to take her own life because of financial trouble and conflicts with her husband. The coal was lit outside of the child's room but the gas fumes seeped into the small room, where the 2-year-old son was sleeping. The mother and baby were found the next morning by the father. They were rushed to the hospital but the child died while being treated.
The sentencing took into consideration that the 33-year-old was institutionalized in September 2015 for a mental disorder and that the woman could be considered feeble-minded at the time of the crime. The defense argued that the mother had no intentions to kill the child, but the jury disagreed.
