As a complimentary gift to all Olympians competing in the 'Olympic Games Rio 2016,' South Korea's Samsung provided 12,500 Galaxy S7 smartphones to nearly 11,200 athletes from 206 nations and two independent teams. However, it has been discovered that the athletes on the North Korean team did not receive their complimentary smartphones.

According to reports, instead of being gifted to the 31 North Korean athletes, the smartphones provided by Samsung have been withheld by one of the team's managers. Witnesses have claimed in the past that North Korean managers and coaches often confiscate gifts given to their athletes during international competitions. Some have theorized this is the case to limit communication capabilities for their athletes.
