MURIM SCHOOL - EPISODE 15
A little something for your listening pleasure:
Chae Yoon comes to the school looking for his daughter, Sun Ah. Si Woo counsels him to wait and also tells his version of what happened during the housefire, with the principal as the good guy. He also warns him against allying himself with Wang Hao. Hwang goes to Soon Duk's dad and asks his version of events 18 years prior. In martial arts, Si Woo demonstrates his fighting prowess, disarming one of the instructors and overpowering him. He also warns the teacher not to harm his friends again. In Seoul, Chi Ang is filled in on everything by his father and given part of the key to the artifact. Soon Duk learns from her father that he ditched Si Woo in the forest as a baby to evade the cultists and survive to raise her. So now she blames herself for Si Woo's life and intends to travel far away. Chae Yoon finally remembers it was the Chairman of the Murim organization that betrayed him that night. Juk Poong agents set a trap for Hwang, but he fights them all off, and Chae Yoon pops in to help. Hwang is stabbed in the process. They return to Murim School, and another Juk Poong attempts to stab him, but Chae Yoon stops him using Gi Chae Sool. Chi Ang turns on Si Woo when they discover Soon Duk gone...
So now we have the old "runaway girlfriend" trope. It's like when they make a drama, they get handed a piece of paper with a few questions to answer. What's always on there? The hero's fiancee has to up and flee. Why? And then you have a list of options:
? She's not the person she thought she was.
? The hero is not the person she thought he was.
And then it all gets tied to some defining tragedy in the past. It's not that I'm a little tired of that -- it's that I'm really tired of it. Even when you turn it around, where the guy checks out, it's not that fun or original either. I understand how it works: One person meets the other, one or both initially resist, they fall in love, insert obstacles to said love, happy ending. The basic plot in every romance scenario ever.
? I can bear it in some way/I can stand it in some way/You should be happy like this/Day by day it fades away ?
Chi Ang's one-trick-pony personality is getting a little tiring. While we learn more about his relationship with his mom, and what she wants for him, the sweet taste was soured when Chi Ang flatly refuses to be friends with Si Woo. While I don't expect them to be fast friends, I had a little hope when they had a bromance of sorts going. I mean, we're on the last episode. The last few episodes are when the pieces start falling into place, so is Chi Ang going to end up being the bad guy, even in the end?
It's nice to see Chae Yoon reunited with his kids, even if it took this long to do it. I'm not sure why they strung it out this long, but I'm sure it serves the plot in some way. I kinda wanted a happy resolution, with Sun Ah, Principal Hwang, Chae Yoon, and Si Woo happy and comfortable with a biological father as well as a surrogate one (my cousin is a great real-life example). Hopefully the last episode will give us some closure on that.
One of these men didn't take their Geritol. Can you guess which one?
That martial arts teacher is something else again. Even when she smiles, it feels foul. They found a great character actor for her part, though. I would have loved for Si Woo to teach her a lesson (along with a pithy "class dismissed"), but I imagine the comeuppance will have to wait til the last. I'm sure Bup Gong is going to use the new instructors as a personal guard, and she seems to be the one the show is focusing on. It'll be satisfying to see her fall.
Regardless, the show seems to be chugging along nicely. Along with large shovelfuls of plot, we had a couple action scenes and some exciting vignettes even. I'm now really excited to see the end, even as I'm also sad the show's coming to a close. What were your favorite moments? Let me know in the comments below.
