Mattner is from Adelaide, Australia and she teaches English in Japan. She was taking time off in Seoul when she experienced the most traumatizing event of her life. Mattner claimed that she was part of a pub crawl in Hongdae the night she was drugged, abducted and raped by a man she claims she has never met before in her life.
South Korean authorities didn't take Mattner's case seriously, allegedly botching up the process of gathering the necessary evidence by failing to adhere to the proper "Rape Procedures" and collect "DNA evidence," leaving her with no other recourse but to take matters into her own hands. According to Mattner, she spent hours at the police station explaining what happened, informing authorities that she did not know who raped her and that she was drugged, not simply blacked out from being drunk. Mattner also claims that her assailant, whom she discovered was residing in London, sent her a Facebook friend request the day right after she was raped by him. Mattner took screen shots of her attacker's name and picture and immediately submitted them to the police.
Mattner set up a GoFundMe page, gathering the courage to tell millions of strangers about her story in order to receive the financial aid necessary to travel back and forth between Seoul and London, the place of her assailant's residence. A part of her story goes, "I recall pleading with the taxi driver to take me to my hostel. He ignored me and continued driving under the instruction of the man next to me. The next thing I recall is being on a bed in a hotel room. The man was on top of me. I struggled and tried to push him away but was again too heavily drugged to manage anything. I woke up the next morning completely naked."
Mattner concludes her story with, "The prevalence of incidents like this, especially involving foreign tourists in Seoul, is sickening. It is horrifying how easy it is to fall victim to men like this who specialise in preying on women in such a calculated and targeted manner."
Since she set up the GoFundMe page, Mattner has raised over $12,000 USD in a matter of two weeks.
