The case of how 'A', a high school student with an intellectual disability, was expelled not long after his admission at the request of concerned parents, is said to be under review once again.
According to the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRC), among the 2,179 cases of discrimination that were reported last year, over half of them, or 1,126 cases, were discrimination against people with disabilities.
The sheer volume of incidents related to discrimination against the disabled that are reported to the NHRC is a clear indicator that Korean society is still outright prejudiced against those with any kind of disability.

One such case of discrimination is of 'A', who was booted from his high school briefly after his admission. The parents of the students in his class had submitted a petition at the NHRC requesting for 'A' to be transferred to another school.
The NHRC had recommended taking disciplinary or corrective action but the school ended up expelling 'A' based on grounds that his unruly behavior will disturb the learning environment.
The NHRC pointed out that the school's decision is a direct violation of the Disability Discrimination Act which prohibits the coerced transfer of a person with a disability.
