[MV & Song Review] miss A's Suzy & EXO's Baekhyun - 'Dream'

Baekhyun, Suzy

The anticipated duo of miss A's Suzy and EXO's Baekhyun is finally here! SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment offered up their artists to MYSTIC Entertainment which then coupled these two idol gems together to create a rich, heartwarming song and give life to these beautifully written lyrics. "Dream" leaves a lovely impression on the ears and a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart. Listen below and see just what I'm talking about.

There is so much to love about this song! First off, the lyrics are whimsical and charming, and I love how the MV portrays it as a conversation carried between the two rather than something acted out. The piano sings alongside Suzy's angelic notes, and the low tones coming from the double bass carry the clean voice of the handsome Baekhyun! Don't forget the soft tempo coming from the drums.  The instrumentals supported their vocals remarkably well! When it comes to on-scene chemistry, you can feel the love between the two because they somehow portray that phase of when love is still ripe and fresh and yet you know the person's qualities wholesomely. Maybe on the cusp of just escaping the honeymoon phase but not completely out of it just yet!

"Dream" elegantly escapes the other mundane ballads with its jazz and neo-soul influenced sounds and R&B style. K-Pop doesn't offer a lot of jazz tracks so MYSTIC really hit the nail on the head with this one. "Dream" has all the elements that made San E's and Raina's "Midsummer's Night Sweetness" the memorable hit that it is!

The lyrics are the most winning aspect of this song because it paints more than a picture, it pulls you into their love story! Take the chorus for example: "Dream, that I can never have again,That was really sweet - I think you are just like the dream." Way to pull at my heartstrings! I also love the English lines added in the final bridge: "Well, I don't care, Even if you're a sweet liar / Well, I don't care, Cause I will make you believe." It is the admittance that they know the love (the sweet liar) they experience is almost unreal because of their genuine emotions! However, they are fools for love and do the only thing lovers do best - believe in their sincere hearts! Love may be blind, but in this instance, you can see the magic that is love flowing all around them.

The MV is well dressed, staged eloquently and offers a real vintage sort of live cafe performance vibe. My only complaint is that I would have much rather preferred the artists singing the song during the recording a bit instead of 'mock singing,' simply because it offers a more realistic expression to the subtle hums and ab-libs throughout the song.

I do appreciate the use of a live band in the recording because it enriches the fact that this is a jazz track, not just any old ballad! On a side note, I think the sound meets JYP's style and expectations as well since he has that soulful, in-touch sense with music. It also pacifies SM Entertainments need to feature idols in an over-the-top box for all their MVs. So with each of these ideas in mind, anyone can see why this song is refreshing for anyones musical palette and earning such a high score in this review!
