'Cheese In The Trap' - Episode 4
Is anyone else out of breath from watching this drama? Because I'm still trying to recover from the ending of episode 3, and episode 4 gave me multiple mini heart attacks with its rapidly budding relationship between Yoo Jung and Seol. Not that I'm complaining that the story is moving along at a rapid pace, but can't a girl a breather?!
Kicking things off, Seol goes into a mini breakdown after accepting Yoo Jung's proposal and I was right there with her, having my little moment of menboong. His confession, followed by his smile and his beautiful face glistening in the night, was too much sweetness in one scene for me to handle.
But moving along from that opening, episode 4 was THE episode where I became aware of my growing addiction to this drama, mainly because of the impeccable casting that helped bring the webtoon come to life. The rapid plot development had me on an intense emotional rollercoaster throughout, but the script can only do so much as it's up to the actors to really execute their lines and mold their 2-dimensional characters to an actual, living, breathing person.
There were so many moments in this episode where my friend and I found ourselves gawking at how much Park Hae Jin resembled Yoo Jung from the webtoon. At how Seo Kang Joon's interpretation of In Ho gave it so much more vitality, and especially at how Bora and Eun Taek are even better than what I've imagined them to be in human form.
Though it steers away from the general plot, I want to take a step back and talk about how adorable Eun Taek and Bora are together. While everyone is struggling to figure out if they're either on team Yoo Jung or team In Ho, I'm here getting all giddy watching Eun Taek's unrequited love for Bora. I can only hope that the writer include more scenes of Taek & Bora because there is only so much relationship drama I can take in one episode.
Seol and Yoo Jung go on their first date as a couple this episode and it's not the honeymoon romance that we've expected as Seol finds out that she and Yoo Jung are nothing alike. We already knew that 'Cheese In The Trap' isn't going to be a conventional Korean romance drama, but I wouldn't have complained if the scene was a tad bit less painfully awkward.
It was uncomfortable enough when Yoo Jung threw his phone after texting Seol back, but for him to be completely unaware of Seol getting uneasy about everything? Bring back Seol and Yoo Jung ship right this minute! Girls, if there is anything you get out of this episode I hope that it's not a matter of the guy being perfect, but being in a relationship with someone (and being in love) is more about the genuine feelings you get when you're with that person.
Narratively, though, I appreciate Yoo Jung because he's a paradox - unilaterally sweet, gentle, and boyish with Seol yet harsh, manipulative, and calculative to others. So far, his character is written with such mystery and complexity and from the way the story is unfolding, we'll be seeing much more of his hard-edge side later on.
In addition to Eun Taek and Bora couple, I fell in love at first sight with Seol and In Ho (incoming SLS moment). Their interactions are vibrant, funny, easy-on-the-eyes and heart (in contrast to how Seol was with Yoo Jung), and adds personality to the overall plot.
The two are now much more than just acquaintances thanks to In Ho's aggressive, no-filter yet easygoing demeanor that complements Seol's reclusive personality. He even helps Seol be more honest about her thoughts and communicate much more effectively when faced with unfair situations.
It's still too early to tell if I like In Ho or Yoo Jung as Seol's partner, but the synergy between In Ho and Seol is undeniably favorable compared to the stiffness that I felt during Yoo Jung and Seol scenes. I'm especially looking forward to how the writer will develop Yoo Jung as he seems to have much more depth to his character than meets the eye since In Ho's emotions are readily available for the viewers and Seol.
