If you think about it, 'Reply 1988' was likely even harder to make, production-wise, than the previous 'Reply' series because it's set even further back in the past.
'Reply 1988' is chockfull of clothing, memorabilia and pieces that only existed in the 80s, down to every last detail. So how did the show get their hands on all of these set pieces?
The staff of the tvN show talked to HeraldPOP about everything that went down in creating the set and costume for the show.
The staff shared, "The prop team has the hardest time. In order to buy the antique goods, they not only went to auction sites, but secondhand sites and overseas sites. The prices also varied infinitely. There were barely any 1988 Olympic memorabilia left in the country, since Korea was the host country. Because of that, they bought the items from overseas."
The staff of 'Reply 1988' also told HeraldPOP how they obtained the set pieces for each category. Take a look below!
The Alleyway:
The staff explained: You might have noticed in the drama that there is broken glass on top of the wall and the used briquette under the stairs. This is keeping true to what an alleyway would have looked like back in 1980s Korea. The broken glass was placed on top of walls to block thieves from getting over.
1980s Fashion:
Packaging from the past:
According to the prop team, a few canned products were able to be bought from the United States, like SPAM. For the packaging that was too hard to find, the team used photos from the 80s to create the packaging themselves. For the 'Banana Milk' that Sunwoo's sister Jinju likes, they obtained the old packaging from the company Binggrae and poured new 'Banana Milk' into it.
The cars, Pride and Lemans:
The cars, Pride and Lemans, that are featured in the show were popular cars back in the day. As you can see in the scenes, the cars were in working order.
