Yet another controversy has brewed surrounding the Chosun University medical student who beat and confined his girlfriend for four hours. The man, identified as 'A', was let off with a light penalty for his atrocities after he posted a bond worth 5 million KRW ($4,200) to avoid jail time.
This past December 8, the courts had ruled that 'A' pay a fine of 12 million KRW ($10,143) instead of penalizing him with a heavier sentence. Gwangju District Court explained its ruling, saying, "'A' posted a 5 million KRW bail bond, and aside for the fine he received for a DUI, he has no prior criminal record, and we considered the risk that he may be expelled from school if he is given a sentence heavier than a probation." At this ruling, the victim protested, demanding that 'A' be more severely punished, which had started the controversy.

Some people are raising the issue that "the bail bond system through which the suspect entrusted the money that corresponds to the victim's suffering instigates innocence," asserting it isn't right to reduce the defendant's sentence when he hasn't come to actual terms with the victim and pointed out that the bond shouldn't be one of the requisites for reducing a criminal sentence.
