One young woman's dream to escape her impoverished home and live independently turned into a nightmare when she unluckily encountered the worst possible boss.
The woman in her twenties, simply identified as 'A', had begun working part time at a pool hall in North Jeolla Province's Jeonju City after her friend had introduced the job to her. Putting her complete trust in the owner of the pool hall, who happened to be her friend's uncle, 'A' put forth all her energy into the job and worked diligently. However, the owner, a 42-year-old man identified by his surname Kim, took advantage of the fact that 'A' was in a financial rut.
This past May, Kim had lured 'A' to a play a round of pool with him, betting money on the match. Kim won the game, leaving 'A' 1.3 million KRW (~$1,125 USD) short. Kim then abruptly requested 'A' for sexual favors, which she refused, leading him to strangle her and sexually assault her. In this manner, Kim continued to assault 'A' a total of nine times, using the money she owed her as blackmail. Kim also threatened that he will spread videos of her that he captured of her online. When 'A' told him that she had a boyfriend, he kicked her in the stomach and confined her in the pool hall for twelve days.
Unable to withstand Kim's atrocities for any longer, 'A' withdrew her security deposit and paid back the money that she owed him from the pool game.
Kim's brutality only came to light after his niece reported him. Investigations found that 'A' hadn't reported Kim herself because she was afraid that her family and friends would learn of her victimization.
The courts in Jeonju sentenced Kim to seven years in prison, ordered for him to wear a tracking device that will monitor his activity for seven years, disclose his offenses for a total of five years, and complete 80 hours of sexual violence treatment program.
