Avengers: Age of Ultron is turning out to be one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. The sequel is the fastest in history to reach 9 million viewers in South Korea! This is currently as of the afternoon of May 9 KST on its 17th day of release.
Previously, the Hollywood films 'Avatar', 'Frozen' and 'Interstellar' had reached 9 million viewers within 32 days. 'Avengers 2' has made that landmark in around half the time!
The film also beat the time it took popular Korean films 'The Admiral: Roaring Currents' and 'Ode to my Father' (25 days) to make it to 9 million viewers. 'Avengers 2' even beat 'The Thieves', which had taken 19 days to reach 9 million tickets.
This sequel proved that not all sequels are worse than the original, as it already beat 'The Avengers' box office, which had a little over 7 million viewers in South Korea in 2012.
Part of the reason for its huge success in Korea might be because part of the film was shot in Seoul, actress Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim) had a supporting role, and Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans made a lot of headlines when they came to Korea to promote their film. It also happens to be a great superhero film with a star-studded cast.
