The movie 'Birdman' may have won four awards at the Oscar's last night, but many Koreans aren't talking about that, they're talking about the scene with Emma Stone criticizing the smell of kimchi at a flower shop owned by a Korean. Her father, played by Michael Keaton, asks for flowers that smell nice, Emma says, "It all smells like f*cking kimchi."
Whoa, then it must smell awesome. All kidding aside, kimchi isn't known for its amazing smell. That's why Koreans don't take kimchi fried rice to work and leave the fan on when working with kimchi in their very homes. But how dare Americans criticize it.....?
Netizens either commented disappointedly with, "It's a comment that disregards Koreans," and, "Honestly, she could've said it smelled like poop, but she belittles like that, crazy bitch," while others commented more generously with, "It's one of the set ups to explain the character who appears here," and, "Emma Stone likes Korean food in real life keke and in 'Amazing Spider Man 2,' Gwen Stacy comes out as a fan of Korean food. That's why they purposely put in a scene of her belittling kimchi."
Regardless, I'm just thinking about how much Korea is stepping up in American television and movies. The language, culture, and the mere mention of Korea is popping up everywhere these days!
The movie will be opening in Korean theaters on March 5... Maybe people will be taking kimchi to 'kimchi slap' the screen in lieu of the traditional tomato throwing.
