SEE ALSO: Park Shin Hye is praised for her timeless appearance
At first I wasn't sure if I liked seeing Beom Jo having to take the fall for his mother's actions. It's a typical K-Drama cliche for characters to have to deal with the consequences of their parents' choices, even when it's not their fault. In Ha especially embodies this idea throughout the drama, constantly feeling guilty for her mother's choices and at one point almost giving up her entire career to expose her mother's wrongdoings. I was definitely not a fan, but after seeing Beom Jo try to make things right with his mother, I find that 'Pinocchio' does make a point that, as frustrating as it is, someone does have to take responsibility for the past.
I actually think 'Pinocchio' is trying to get this message across to its audience. By taking us K-Drama fans to the newsroom, 'Pinocchio' has shown us some very real situations. Although not everything can be true to life, one thing is for sure--there is corruption in the news world in the form of business and political connections. This is the present reality, but if the people who are in power won't admit to their crimes, then who will? None of this was Beom Jo's fault and. in fact, his mother is not even the sole villain in this whole news manipulation fiasco, either. There are a lot of people involved in the corruption, but for the public to even get a glimpse of it, someone has to go down and take the blame. Beom Jo is our martyr in that sense. Perhaps 'Pinocchio' is making a bold statement saying that if people want to see justice prevail, they will have to make huge, sometimes unfair, sacrifices for it.
With Beom Jo turning himself into the police, Ro Sa has finally been defeated. But I have to say that her downfall was a bit anticlimactic. Ro Sa was definitely built up to be a formidable opponent and she was well acted by the talented Kim Hae Sook, but she made some pretty dumb moves that I felt were her ultimate undoing. I expected her to bring out her big guns in Episode 19, or at least make a devious move that even Cha Ok would be unable to predict, but all she got with all that money and smarts was a lousy hitman, a fumbling legal team with just one working member, and a really, really delayed call in firing her strongest enemy Song Cha Ok.
I appreciate the various cast members coming together to take Ro Sa down, but I also wish In Ha could have been one of the stronger players. I'm happy that In Ha had her precious moment with her mother, but wasn't it originally In Ha's dream to be a reporter to expose the truth to the world in a cool way via broadcast? I think In Ha has been on the down-low for a bit too long, and it annoys me to see Dal Po get to do all the snubbing. It's not entirely In Ha's fault considering that MSC is keeping her shut up, but at this point I'd rather she just ditched MSC and either got hired by YGN or do her own work. Who says she needs to be a TV reporter to make a difference? There's the internet after all.
Hopefully In Ha will have much more to do in the final episode. From the beginning of this series, I found In Ha to be an adorable, passionate young woman who has the potential to kick so much ass. I would love it if the drama ended with In Ha as an amazing 'Pinocchio' reporter.
Highlights:
Episode 18
Translation: "Sup bitches, sorry for quitting."
Translation: "Still gonna cause trouble for this company, though, that cool?" I mean, power to ya, In Ha, but seriously, is it a good idea to say this stuff to your superiors?
Especially when this shit can happen?!
Uh oh. I hope this isn't the kind of foreshadowing that means something bad is gonna happen for Gramps soon.
Ladies and gentlemen, the worst hitman ever. His casualties include:
A plant.
Another plant.
More plants.
I'm hoping this was on purpose because otherwise, that was just sad.
Oh ho ho, dat Yoo Mo/Pil Rae ship doe.
The third wheelage is so real.
I actually felt bad for Ro Sa here. She's not completely evil; she's just a mom who wants the best for her kid. She goes to evil extents to secure that, but still...
Chan Soo should've actually done this a long time ago.
They finally have it--their mother-daughter moment.
Shut down.
Like a BAWSS.
Episode 19
Ro Sa recruits an impressive-lookin' legal team.
And only one guy does work. Disappointing work at that.
Lee Joon makes a cameo as a celebrity framed for propofol abuse.
This, of course, triggers Yoo Rae's protective sasaeng instincts, putting a cute spin on "Oppa didn't mean it."
I expected some villainous badassery to ensue after this.
Instead, Cha Ok just got fired. And yeah, I agree with Cha Ok. If you really wanted to shut her up, you should've fired her a long time ago, Ro Sa.
STOP WITH THE SORRY FEELINGS ALREADY JUST STOP.
Omo.
Omo omo.
The ship. It is real.
And then there's bromance!
Wow. Way to get his hopes up bro. Beom Jo = always the second lead.
Meanwhile Reporter Jang is still trying to recruit Yoo Rae as his disciple.
"Did you see that turn?" I did, and it was adorable.
I'm getting just as frustrated as you, girl, seeing your skills not being put to use.
Whoa, they got a call from the police station chief? Does this mean that the police are involved in all this, too?! I mean, I guess this shouldn't come as that big of a surprise, but still!
We end with a sad Beom Jo pretty much asking Dal Po, "So 'bout that bromance, we game?"
