On December 20, 'A's younger brother posted in an online community detailing the story of how 'A' got into the fight.
According to the post, 'A' and his younger brother were taking 'A's 5-year-old daughter out for a stroll in the park. While talking, they noticed a group of three high school students smoking cigarettes. Out of concern for his daughter's health, 'A' walked up to the group and informed them, "This is a no-smoking zone." The students replied, "Leave us alone," and 'A' decided to back down, not wanting to start anything in front of his daughter.
However, while 'A' and his daughter were walking away, the students said, "He freaked out," and laughed. One student called after him saying, "Don't thoughtlessly overreact. If you do that, then your daughter will get hurt." As soon as 'A' heard the high school students talk about his daughter, he slapped them and initiated a physical fight.
'A's brother wrote that he was shocked to see 'A' behave this way as he was usually a polite, obedient, and hard-working person. He appears to believe his brother was justified, however, as he addresses the high schoolers in his post, saying, "Don't mistakenly think that an ahjusshi in his 30s-40s is avoiding you because he's afraid of you." He continues, "It's because he has responsibilities and a future that he is avoiding you." He ends with, "He doesn't care what you guys do, but if you threaten his family, then this ahjusshi in his 30-40s will completely change."
The story has received an overwhelming amount of attention online as netizens debate whether the man was right to attack the high schoolers. While some comments focus on the high schoolers' rude behavior, saying, "Ugh, these bastards. I feel sorry for your mothers who had to carry you for [nine] months and feed you seaweed soup (traditionally cooked on birthdays)," and, "Do we avoid high schoolers because they're scary? No, we avoid them because they're dirty and the law is scary," others state that there were better ways to deal with the high schoolers, saying, "But does the majority really think that it's cool to get in young people's face like that? Instead of rashly picking a bone with them, he should've said something wise to them so that they realize their wrongs."
