HIGH SCHOOL - LOVE ON, EPISODE 17
Woo Hyun experiencing a heart attack
RECAP
After Woo Hyun is kicked out of Sung Yeol's house, he, Seul Bi, and Ji Hye end up at the shop. Ji Hye intends to be a parent to both of her sons. At Sung Yeol's place, Sung Yeol's father cautions the boy about restraint -- he doesn't want Sung Yeol to self-destruct. It's test time in Ethics class, but somehow the answer sheets disappear after everyone has taken the test. Everyone also sees the brand on Seul Bi's wrist glow. The next day, after saving her from a mob of students, Sung Yeol coldly tells her not to apologize or thank him anymore. Sung Yeol meets with Woo Hyun and tells him to give up on Seul Bi or face the fact that she will disappear. Sadly, Woo Hyun caves and puts her in Sung Yeol's care. Seeing her tears, Sung Yeol tells her not to cry around him anymore.
Doing Ji Hye's nails and bonding with her.
Seul Bi confronts Sunbae about his actions, but he simply returns the answer sheets in shreds, and tells her he will do even worse things. Jae Seok, deciding to beat up Ki Soo, is threatened by his former lackeys. Woo Hyun finds Seul Bi at school after hours, busily piecing the answer sheets together with scotch tape. Sung Yeol races off to find her and runs into Woo Hyun. As they face off, leaves whirl around them furiously. When the mysterious wind subsides, they head to their homes, and Sung Yeol realizes he doesn't know who he is anymore. He confides to his father that he's scared he's becoming a monster. The next day, Sung Yeol argues with Seul Bi. Woo Hyun is ill, and she wants to go see him. She trips and falls, and suddenly faints as she clutches her brand. Woo Hyun abruptly clutches his chest and collapses...
The answer sheets mysteriously vanish.
MY TAKE
I've always taken issue with Sung Yeol's actions because his
actions seem not merely selfish but also harmful, mean-spirited, and evil. Yes, I get that he's in pain, that he is obsessed with Seul Bi and hates Woo Hyun for stealing his mother. None of that excuses what he's done. At least he finally understands that he's becoming, in his words, "a monster," and wants to stop. The character is a teen, not a terrorist. I'm sorry. I know many of you are on Team Sung Yeol, and I respect that. I still don't like how cold he is to the supposed object of his affection. So, you're madly in love with her and you treat her like doggie doo? Makes no sense to me.
Back to back, the brothers fend off the magical wind
If I were to take K-dramas as examples of real Korean life (I'm not that silly), I'd think that school kids were mercurial and real jerks. It's back and forth. Seul Bi is well-liked, then she is on their hit list again, then she's popular again, then she and the class are on the outs. I don't think I've seen another high school drama where the kids turn on the other kids so easily. Bottom-feeder Jae Seok seems to have sway over his classmates, even when he's been abandoned by his bully-boys. Which is sad. I was hoping he would learn a lesson in humility.
Facing off against Sunbae.
Seul Bi is just a delightful character, and I almost feel if anyone other than Kim Sae Ron were playing her, it would not work as well. She brings a youthful exuberance and a natural innocence to the drama that keeps me coming back. I like that the writers also respect that she is 14, and they've kept the romance present, but tasteful. I'm hoping she can keep getting roles after this. Seems like a pretty good character actress. I just love seeing what she's going to do next, which is probably a testament to the skills of the writers.
"I'll help you, son, and restrain you for your own good."
Has Sunbae taken the ultimate step and tried to kill Woo Hyun outright? He has to survive to the end of the drama, right? To graduate and end up at the university, like we saw in the beginning? I wanna know what's going on. Seul Bi faints and Woo Hyun has a heart attack? Are the two linked somehow, and Sunbae severed that link?
It's times like this I hate the fact that it's only on once a week. No special review passes for me. I'm just like you guys, I have to wait a week like everyone else. There's just three episodes left. I'll keep watching if you do!
