HI SUHYUN & LEE HI (ft. Bobby of iKON) - "I'm Different"
Debuting on Pepero Day (November 11) under YG's label, HI SUHYUN has dropped their single "I'm Different." HI SUHYUN is a duo consisting of solo singer Lee Hi and vocalist Suhyun, one half of the group Akdong Musician. The track also features Bobby from iKON, who also co-wrote the piece.
"I'm Different" starts with a guitar and beats, then the tune bounces along at a slick pace to the sound of a horn section and electric guitars. There's a swirling sax part in the chorus reminiscent of James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)," albeit at a higher tempo. The tune was clearly meant to have a retro feel to it.
The girls turn in a pretty impressive performance vocally. The girls also sing at different pitches: Lee Hi's vocals are low and bluesy, whereas Suhyun's is higher. Their voices blend well during the chorus, and it's obvious they're giving their all.
The only quibble I have is what I hope is not intended to be rap. The rap breaks performed by the girls are amateurish, more chants than raps. It detracts from what otherwise is a good tune.
Speaking of raps, Bobby has a very small part here, about 22 seconds, but his rapping keeps the beat well.
The girls sang skillfully and the tune is pretty catchy, but at times reminded me a lot of 15&, a JYP duo, because of the retro style. I'd love to ask YG is this representative of HI SUHYUN's style or is this meant to stand on its own? I'm not sure there's enough to differentiate them if this is their schtick. The tune is good by itself, but I'd love to see if there's more variation in a full album release.
