On March 8 at around 3:30 AM in the city of Wonju, Mr. Choi found Mr. Kim trespassing into his house. They engaged in a physical fight that took a turn for the worst as Mr. Kim ended up severely beaten and is now in a brain dead state.
The prosecution announced that it wished to sentence Mr. Choi to 1 year and 6 months in prison. According to news reports, Mr. Choi used an aluminum laundry drying rack to hit the robber repeatedly. While the court stated that this was a dangerously violent act, Mr. Choi's side maintained that he did it in self-defense. An official ruling has yet to be made by the Wonju Branch of the Chuncheon District Court as Mr. Choi will be tried again next month.
Netizens criticized the prosecutors, with their top comments saying, "A state that protects the robber. Can robbers handle robber cases properly?", "This judge who makes this ruling. Shouldn't his qualifications be reviewed?", and, "What is this nation's law coming to?"
