An entire city finds itself virtually paralyzed after Busan faced an hourly rate of about 110 mm (4.3 in) to 130 mm (5 in) of torrential rain in the afternoon of August 25, causing landslides, at least five reported deaths, washed away vehicles, and flooded railways as well as roads.
The rain started falling on the night of August 24, but became thick starting at 1 PM KST on August 25, flooding the area trapped by the Geumjeong Mountain. The rain stopped at around 5 PM with about 242 mm (9.5 in) of rain in Geumgjeong-gu and 222 mm (8.7 in) in Buk-gu.
At 2:50 PM, a city bus was swept away by the rain (seen in video above), but was caught by a bridge rail, killing one passenger, Ms. Ahn (19).
At about 3:15 PM on this day, one car was washed away and isolated in the underground roadway. The police and firefighters rushed to the scene with a boat and was able to send Ms. Na (57) and Ms. Lim (15) to the hospital, but the two passed away.
At 4 PM, Ms. Nam (60) passed away when crossing an inclined street in front of an apartment. She fell over due to the rapid torrents that formed through a thin alleyway and was crushed under a car.
At 4:30 PM, another car, carrying three women, was swept away by the flood water. While two women were able to escape, Ms. Hong (53), who had been sitting in the passenger seat, was discovered dead.
In addition, there was a landslide by a senior citizen center at 2:22 PM and another at a villa that caused 15 people to take shelter in a nearby school.
As a result of this horrific disaster in Busan, people are kindly relaying their condolences and prayers through Twitter with the use of "#PrayForBusan," which is currently trending worldwide, showing how the kindness of others all around the world will hopefully give Busan the strength to get back on their feet.
