SINGLE REVIEW
Debuting in 2012, this sextet first collaborated with labelmate IU on the high-charting "Sea of Moonlight." Known for upbeat, infectious grooves like "Vista," "I Don't Know," and the reggaeton "Wicked," now the group has teamed up with Shinsadong Tiger to bring us their newest single, "One More." Shinsadong Tiger penned some of my favorite 4minute songs, so I was excited to see what he could do with FIESTAR.
From the beginning with the repeated chorus "hanananana hana deo" (one more) to the rap segment, this is a well-crafted song guaranteed to spawn ear worms. It's got kind of an R&B funky sound to it, and the belted pre-chorus by Linzy, "If we keep going like this, it'll end in vain," really caught my ear. Not only does that vocal serve to help energize the song, I also like the lyrical concept. The girls sound conflicted in the tune, which helps give it more depth. I like the concept: "Let's make out -- wait, maybe not." The rap -- because almost every K-Pop song seems to need a rap part -- was also well done. The girls really killed it.
In case you couldn't tell, I love this track. I can't imagine that you wouldn't at least find yourself bobbing your head to this tune. Upbeat, funky, and danceable, this song, like the group, deserves a lot of love.
MV REVIEW
The video was strange. While it features the bright colors I've come to expect from a FIESTAR video, I was a little disappointed with the distinct lack of a plot. The MV seems to consist of various members lying on things like couches, beds, tables, and floors in form-fitting outfits (or shorts), a dance sequence, and inexplicably, scenes with a boxer. I'm guessing he was in there to give the video more punch...Thank you, I'll be here all week.
The MV is different from their previous videos, such as "I Don't Know" with the byuntae antics or "Vista" with the superheroes and the special effects. In some ways, I miss those because a cute concept does more for me than the sexy one, simply because the sexy concept is starting to be overdone. But I understand: sex sells.
That being said, I don't think the video was over the top sexy. In the solo shots, most of the members wear long pants. They're tight pants, but they still cover the legs. There's an imaginative dance sequence (separate from the striped outfits) during the rap line that was shot in black and white except for the hot pants, which are a bright, shiny red. That was a sweet visual trick, though I've seen it many times before.
I like the video, it's just not as fun or as memorable as their previous MVs. Though I don't feel like a byuntae for watching it, I think some of the comedic concepts they used in the past would have worked better here. It's a good video, but not a great one.
