ANGEL EYES EPISODE 5
After taking a week off in light of the passenger ship incident, 'Angel Eyes' is back! We left off with our two star-crossed lovers getting drunk at the planetarium where they first met. Soo Wan still does not know that Dr. Dylan Park is really her first love, Dong Joo.
The next morning is the aftermath and Soo Wan seems to be nursing a hangover (and probably a bad case of "yuck mouth" that usually follows a night of drinking). Min Soo, a policewoman and her friend since childhood, joins her for breakfast. Soo Wan dines and dashes, leaving Min Soo with the bill.
At the hospital, Dong Joo holds the infant they rescued last episode. He talks softly to the child, telling the child that if he dreams of his mother, he should assure her he's fine so she won't worry. Soo Wan sees this, but says nothing. She returns his clothes, and offers to buy a meal to smooth things over. He refuses and says there's nothing wrong.
Min Soo calls Dong Joo; she tries to put him in contact with the retired detective who handled the hit and run accident that killed Dong Joo's mother, but an urgent situation at the ER prevents that meeting.
Ji Woon joins Soo Wan at the fire station for lunch. He banters back and forth with her colleagues. She sees Ji Woon out, and they wrestle each other playfully, laughing the whole time. Teddy watches them and admits to fellow fireman and sunbae Woon Chan that Soo Wan is his ideal type.
A few days later, Soo Wan visits the orphanage where the rescued infant was sent. Dong Joo is there, as well, treating a very irritated little girl. Soo Wan sits down and calms the girl. She asks Dong Joo for at least a thank you, and he replies that it's not productive to expect thanks for doing your job. Brrrr...cold!
Ji Woon invites Dong Joo to dine with him and Soo Wan. Dong Joo allows that he wanted to be a rescue worker when he was younger, which bothers Soo Wan. More and more Dong Joo seems like the guy she loved 12 years ago.
At the station, Teddy is talking to his absent grandmother, whom I believe is dead. He promised to buy her long underwear, and he has done so with his first paycheck. We're treated to a hilarious scene in which he dances with a CPR dummy dressed in the long underwear, which turns awkward very quickly when Woon Chan finds him.
Woon Chan invites Teddy to eat with him, and Teddy learns that Woon Chan's son, Jin Mo, believes that his mother is still alive. When Teddy tries to correct the child, Woon Chan cuts him off. The next morning, Woon Chan explains the gap in Jin Mo's knowledge. Woon Chan's wife died when Jin Mo was five. Woon Chan didn't want to explain dying to one so young, so he fabricated a story that Jin Mo's mom was studying in the States. Woon Chan's wife was in on it, and she kept buying gifts, writing letters, and recording clips until the last day to complete the deception.
Soo Wan and Dong Joo have a chance encounter at a theater. Dong Joo finds the movie is sold out and Soo Wan has an extra ticket as Ji Woon is busy at the hospital (how convenient). She offers the extra ticket to Dong Joo, and they watch the movie together. Scenes from the movie remind them of their time together years ago. After the movie, his phone rings, and he fumbles to silence it, but she hears the song -- it's a song from their childhood. When she asks about it, she is just met with a reminder to mind her own business.
In the theater elevator, Dong Joo protects Soo Wan from the crush of the crowd, and his closeness brings memories unbidden to her mind; memories of when they were close, memories of their first kiss, memories of being carried out of the burning theater. She reaches up to feel his face like she did when she was blind, but he grabs her wrist before she can do so, and she leaves.
Soo Wan talks with Min Soo after that is counseled that memories can be deceiving. A bit later, Soo Wan runs into Dong Joo and asks him if he's sure they haven't met. He grabs her wrist, and seemingly turns into a different man as he backs her against a wall and propositions her. She runs off, and resolves not to act crazy anymore, to simply forget about her first love.
Min Soo runs into her old colleague, retired detective Woo Chul. She tells him that the victim's family (Dong Joo) is inquiring about the hit-and-run accident. He asks her to take care of it.
The next day, Soo Wan is not feeling well at all. Still, she has a job to do. She and Teddy bring a patient to the hospital; he's the principal of the school that Dong Joo attended. While Dong Joo regards Soo Wan reeling from her illness, obviously dizzy, the patient grabs Dong Joo's arm and calls out his name. His facade is now shattered, and Soo Wan knows exactly who he is.
In previous episodes, it seemed amusing to Dong Joo that Soo Wan didn't even recognize his voice, yet the flashbacks to their teen years show that he had a completely different voice then. Indeed, he has aged some, and the only thing left that marks him as Dong Joo is his memories as well as his love for Soo Wan. All those he keeps to himself.
It really does seems like Dong Joo is trying to be a jerk to Soo Wan, and he is reserved and quiet around others. She lets us know several times that she really doesn't like him, and the feeling appears to be mutual. I can understand that he doesn't want to interfere in her life, but he doesn't have to be so cold about it. He could simply be a nice guy who's there for a few months and then slips away. Well, not anymore...
Now that his identity is revealed, how is Soo Wan likely to react? It's obvious they both meant a lot to each other. With the return of her first love, who does she have stronger feelings for: Dong Joo, or Ji Woon? Is she likely to be angry that Dong Joo hid his identity from her? Would Ji Woon be jealous if he knew? This episode sets up a lot of conflict.
I'm also concerned about Ji Woon's mother. I haven't discussed it a lot, but in reflection, it seems like she could be an evil drama mama. She schemes and plots, and doesn't seem to like Soo Wan. She's even uncomfortable with Dong Joo, since he at least matches her son's skills, if not outright exceeds them. She feels there's only room for one superstar at the hospital, and that is her son. While I can understand parental pride, I can imagine this turning sour quickly.
What do you guys think? Do you like the way Dong Joo has been treating Soo Wan since his return? Is she likely to be angry, sad, or conflicted? They keep bringing up the hit and run, so how does that figure into this?
