SBS told media outlets on the 5th, "A female participant who was filming 'Couple' at Seogwipo, Jeju Island hanged herself in the dorm at approximately 2 AM today."
According to the SBS rep, the female contestant along with all the other participants had just one final filming left to go when this occurred.
The show released an official statement to express their condolences and apology regarding the unfortunate incident.
"A participant on the show has passed away during the production of 'Couple'.
The staff of 'Couple' find this very regretful and we express our deep condolences.
We also offer our sincere thoughts to the family of the participant. We also offer condolences to the fellow participants who have been filming together for the great pain this must have brought about.
We will do our best to figure out the next steps to take. We once again want to deeply apologize and offer our sincere thoughts, and we will try our best so that such unfortunate circumstances will not occur again in the future."
After investigating, the police believe it to be suicide and revealed that she had used the wire of a hair dryer. Although there was no will, they did find a note in the female dorm that read 'Mom and Dad, I'm sorry', also mentioning that she did not want to live anymore.
While looking into the cause of the suicide, the police have found that after talking to the other participants, the female participant in question was described to have been upset that the male participant she liked on the show had selected another female participant. It is being looked into whether this could have played a role in her decision.
For those unfamiliar with the show, 'Couple' is a matchmaking program in which non-celebrity female and male participants come on the show in hopes of finding a soulmate as they spend a week with each other in a dormitory and carry out various activities.
We offer our condolences to everyone affected by this tragic event.
