Some people credit Psy's fluent English as one of the reasons for his success in America. Psy spoke without any problems on American shows such as 'The Ellen Show' or 'The Today Show', causing everyone to believe that he had no problems with English.
However, Psy revealed that he actually had to work very hard to speak English, and that it caused him some pain. He confessed, "I only lived in America for 4 years, so my English is actually lacking. While in New York, I mostly hung out with the other Korean international students so I rarely used English. Even at Berklee College of Music, I only spoke in English around 5 times. I got strength from the comments saying that I was good at speaking English, but then I started getting worried about my pronunciation. When I get a question in English, I translate it into Korean in my head and then answer in English. The translation process has to happen fast, so my head hurts."
However, he did say that he was working hard to improve and that he is getting better. He said ,"My English is always improving. Currently, I'm at the best that I've ever been in terms of English. I've been watching movies and I can understand the story without the subtitles. I'm learning as quickly as possible. I've had situations where I didn't understand the questions at all in English, but my pride got in the way of asking for them to repeat it again so I just answered."
