The multi-talented singer/songwriter Clara Chung and upcoming rapper Vision held their album showcases at The Loft at UCSD on Wednesday night, and allkpop was there to witness this great event. The Loft is a small, laid back bar/concert venue where students from UCSD hang out and see live performers. It's a cool place because the crowd can really interact with the artists.
When the doors opened at 7:40 pm, people flowed in, and by people, I mean Asian Americans. In fact, the venue seemed to be about 70% Asian boys. The Loft was pretty packed despite it being the week before finals at UCSD, so these fans were willing to sacrifice their grades to see their favorite artists.
Dan aka Dan, an Asian American rapper from the group, Afterschool Special, was the MC of the night. He introduced the opening band, Feats in Inches.
-
Feats in Inches (FNI), a 5-member band from Northridge, California, chose its name because the members aspire to shape great feats with inches of determination. FNI rocked the house with their opening song, urging and clapping with the crowd while saying, "Let's not be shy Asian people!"
The audience was especially excited when Daniel Chae of FNI played a beautiful violin intro for their song, "Smile". The combination of violin and electric cello with conventional band instruments made a beautiful song, and the singer's vocals really shined. Next, FNI played a song that they had only played once before, but they pulled off the fast-paced number without any fumbling. The last song had the audience "whoo"ing with the band, and Clara was in the crowd too, cheering the loudest.
-
Vision took the stage next, and the crowd went wild for him, as the whole left side of the venue consisted of Vision's loyal fans. Soon, everyone was chanting "Vision! Vision!" and making "V" signs with their hands. Vision, the 2010 ISA finalist, may look like your average Asian guy, but he has incredible energy on-stage. With a live band backing him up, he rapped some songs from his 16-track debut album, "Chaos and Clarity". Vision shut it down with his fast-paced rapping, and his cover of "Ghost Busters" was a fun and funky cover of a classic.
-
Last but not least, Clara Chung got on stage to perform songs from her debut album, "Art in My Heart". She started off with "Hum", a nice intro diddy. Next was "Heartstrings", dedicated to all the lovebirds in the audience. Then, during a short break, there was a raffled iPod Shuffle giveaway. Clara performed "Loveprint" afterwards, declaring, "If there's something you can do to change anyone's life, it's just to love them".
The crowd went wild for the next song, "Wake Up in Neverland", featuring the smooth vocals of FNI's Daniel Chang. It was a treat to see them perform it because they usually do not perform it live, as it is hard to replicate all the electronic sounds. Needless to say, it was a perfect harmony. Sadly, Clara announced that this concert would be her last time performing with FNI, as she will be getting her own live band.
Clara then sang "Til We Go", which had a nice heavy drum beat, and she even played trumpet in it. "Camel Song" came next, and the performance was very unique, yet organic with Daniel's live whistling and Clara's feet stomping.
After "Camel Song", Clara sang her own rendition of Far East Movement's "Rocketeer", showing off her stellar keyboard skills.
"Wait On Me", a soothing, slow song that builds up in intensity, was next.
For the finale, Clara performed her most popular song, "Offbeat". In this tribute to her love for music, she played a plethora of instruments, including the melodica and the glockenspiel.
After the concert came to a close, Feats in Inches, Vision, and Clara Chung all came off-stage for a meet-and-greet, autographing fans' merchandise and taking photos with them.
Below are the interviews with Vision and Clara C,who were kind enough to give allkpop an opportunity to get exclusive interviews.

"How did your career start?"
Originally, I wanted to sing, but then I realized I sucked. And then in 8th grade, I wooed this girl I had a crush on with poetry. And then she was like, "A lot of guys who write poems can also rap. Can you rap?", so I went home and started rapping right away. In high school, I was so embarrassed about it, and I only rapped in the car and stuff. Nobody knew. In college, I showed someone, and then things sort of just started falling into place. Then I was getting small gigs.
"I noticed your parents were here, and they had huge smiles on their faces. Were they always this supportive?"
When I told my parents, first they were like, "What is rapping?" I was born and raised in an English school, but my mom was still like, "Were they able to understand your English?" I don't think they got it at first. The CD was recorded just for fun, and when they heard it, then they started to understand that it was something bigger than that.
"What is your favorite song out of your album?"
My album's really personal and real. I get really nervous about people saying stuff about it because it's my life that I'm putting out. "11 Months Shorter" means a lot to me. It's about how I was involved in a huge car crash in my senior year of high school, and how it transformed me.
"How do you feel about your current success? You had quite the following tonight."
I never thought I would be successful. Yeah, they're my friends. They're loyal, almost to a stalker-ish point.
"We heard you were usually quiet and reserved. How do you turn it on while on- stage like that?"
I've been told by a lot of people that I have a split personality. I'm generally pretty quiet and awkward. On stage though, I feel like I black out and it feels like just a minute passed, and thenI'm off stage. Like right now, I feel like a minute passed.
"How can fans follow you?"
I'm trying to start a YouTube channel, uploading videos and stuff. I have a Facebook group. It's http://www.facebook.com/AmplifyVision. There will be a link to the CD there too.
"Any last words for the fans?"
I just want to encourage people. I was just so embarrassed rapping as an Asian. I was the normal kid. A lot of us have so many gifts but are too shy to express them. I just want to encourage them to follow their gifts and abilities.

"What is your favorite song from your album?"
Well, "Offbeat" did really well, but my favorite is "Wait on Me" because it's me telling the forces of life that'll bring me down that I'm gonna come back.
"Did you always want to be a musician, or were you planning on doing something with your psychology degree?"
Oh, I am doing something with it. I teach autistic kids...but music was definitely the thing I dreamed of all the time. But I didn't think was possible so I just like dismissed it.
"What's your advice to young people who are struggling to choose between a career that's stable versus a career they really dream of?"
You gotta have a back-up unless you know you were designed for it. Plan Bs are good, but if it means one or the other, always do what you love first.
"How many instruments do you play?"
Oh wow, let's see...piano, guitar, melodica, flute, glockenspiel...I can play drums but I don't really play...
"Were you trained in these instruments?"
I was trained in piano, but besides that, they're all self-taught.
"If you could cover just one song in the world, what would it be?"
Wow...these are hard questions! Just one song...John Mayer, "Stop This Train".
"How did you guys end up holding a concert together?"
Feats in Inches and I, we're like brothers...wait, sisters, so we had theme come on board. My manager knows Alex, so we decided to do a dual album release party. Yeah, just a small network of musicians.
"Do you get stage fright? I noticed you talked during your songs. Is that to calm your nerves?"
Oh no, that's just because I'm a talker. I get nervous if I'm unprepared, but other than that, I'm pretty comfortable up there.
"What is the biggest change since you became a professional musician?"
My life! The biggest thing is my life. Everything from the friends I have, the way I start a day, the way I finish a day, priorities.
"Lastly, what do you want for Christmas?"
Wow, I don't know! What do you want for Christmas?
"I don't know. Haha."
See? I don't know either! Um, Gibson Hummingbird!
