The Korean film industry will kick of 2023 with a suspenseful colonial-era spy action film, 'Phantom' directed by Lee Hae Young.
Known for his 2018 hit film 'Believer', director Lee Hae Young is back with yet another blockbuster piece set in 1933 Gyeongseong (present day Seoul) in his new project, 'Phantom'. The story follows a group of individuals, each under suspicion of being a spy known as the 'Phantom', planted by independence revolutionaries to collect intel from deep inside the Governor-General of Chōsen (the administrative body over colonial Chosen). All of the suspects have been gathered at a 'Hotel' located on a remote cliffside, and no one can get out until the 'Phantom' is found.
First, veteran actor Seol Kyung Goo takes on the role of Junji, a police officer who must do whatever he can to identify the real spy and make it out of the mysterious 'Hotel' alive. There's also Honey Lee, taking on the role of an unpredictable woman named Park Cha Kyung. Another mysterious figure named Yuriko, played by Park So Dam, intrigues with her unwavering confidence, maintaining a coy smile even at gunpoint. Next, Park Hae Soo takes on the role of Kaito, a security officer in charge of apprehending the 'Phantom'. Finally, Seo Hyun Woo plays the role of a Chief Chun, yet another figure with a hidden agenda of his own.
'Phantom' premieres in theaters across Korea on January 18. In the meantime, check out its first teaser trailer, above.
I'm definitely going to watch this. I hope Park So Dam's in good health now, seeing she's in this. I really hope she's beaten the Big C.
