A North Korean defector revealed North Korea also has girl groups.
On July 25th, the 501st episode of 'Now On My Way to Meet You' was broadcasted on Channel A. During the episode, North Korean defector Kim Keum Hyuk revealed they also had girl groups just like South Korea. He surprised everyone by saying, "Don't be surprised, but there are stage performances just like what Girls' Generation does. 8 to 9 members girl groups in short pants perform on stage."
He explained the rationale behind North Korea's changing stage performance scenes, "The North Korean party is strengthening its censorship over South Korean culture. Last year, almost 10K students confessed. So while strengthening its cultural sanction, it is showing off that they can also do the same thing and is trying to deter defiance."
He continued, "But the limits are obvious. You can see how every girl group member has the same short hairstyle. They can't ease that restriction. Also, all the lyrics end up praising the ruling party."
Something tells me they don’t have a choice to be in those groups and that their contracts are for life not just for seven years. And if they were to try and quit the group they would be killed or sent you a work camp.
