ATEEZ members San and Wooyoung recently sat down for an interview with Vogue to discuss some of their activities as a group and participate in a photoshoot. Wooyoung first spoke about their experiences performing at Coachella recently.
“Coachella is a stage that every artist aspires to be on, so I felt nervous when I first stepped on stage, but as soon as we started our first song, I realized, 'This is what we've always done,' and I relaxed. It was a rough environment with the sandy wind, but it was fun.
San added, “Coachella was a good stepping stone, and I think a lot of people got to know us through our performances there, so we feel like we have to make an even better impression with our new comeback."
Looking back on their beginnings as a group, San explained, “We started touring just four months after we debuted in 2018, and thankfully, our fans always filled the cramped venues. We're very grateful for the people who come to see us now, but we also have a lot of nostalgia for the people who saw the 'beginning' of ATEEZ back then and recognized our potential. Even if they're not fans anymore, if they're watching us somewhere, we want to say, 'Thank you, you did a good job, we made it this far.”
When asked what their next goals as a group are, Wooyoung answered, “I don't know exactly. I just think that first we stood at the Kia Forum in LA, then we wanted to stand at SoFi Stadium where BTS and TWICE stood, and then we wanted to stand at Coachella…so now we want to stand at the Super Bowl, and then we want to be No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and then we want to be No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I remember this one BTS interview. They started off by saying, “I don't know what I want to do anymore because I've achieved everything,” and then they remembered the fans who supported them, and from then on, they thought singing and dancing for the fans was the most important thing. The goals I mentioned above are important to me, but we want to stand on stage with that same kind of heart."
San added, “I don't want us to have specific goals, because once you achieve them, you stop dreaming. We just want to be a team that keeps showing what we can do, and the results will follow.”
Lastly, San and Wooyoung were asked the question of what the most ‘golden time’ in their life was, since their upcoming album is titled ‘Golden Hour.’
Wooyoung answered first: “Honestly, all of my years as an artist are my golden years, because I became famous, lived as much as I could, and accomplished a lot. My goal is to move into the 'Silver Hour' with the members when we're in our 40s and 50s, because it's important to come down just as well as you went up."
San commented that their time on the reality show Kingdom: Legendary War could be seen as their golden hour, and the two reflected on that experience.
“It's funny to say this, but we were really crazy back then. We ended up in third place… and we clearly realized, 'This is where we are, this is our reality, no excuses.' Kingdom was the time when all the members were the most fiery, the most venomous, and we put our blood, sweat, and tears into it because we didn't care about looking good or cool, we just wanted to win. There's a line in my favorite anime that says, “The result is just a byproduct,” and I believe that I'm where I am today because of who I was then. Maybe we were able to go to Coachella because we cut our teeth in Kingdom first, and we’ll continue to work that hard for the rest of our career.”
The two members also modeled in a photoshoot for Vogue.
