On September 24 at around 3:11 AM, in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, a Maserati driven by an unidentified person was involved in a hit-and-run after crashing into the back of a slow-moving motorcycle on the road.
Police are tracking the driver of the luxury foreign car that hit the motorcycle and fled after causing a fatal accident.
The Gwangju Western Police Department reported that the accident happened around 3:11 AM on the 24th. The Maserati, driven by an unknown driver, hit the back of a slow-moving motorcycle. As a result of the crash, the motorcycle driver, a 23-year-old identified as Mr. A, sustained minor head injuries and was taken to the hospital. Mr. A's girlfriend, Ms. B (28), who was riding on the back of the motorcycle, unfortunately died.
Nearby CCTV cameras captured the accident. The footage showed that the Maserati’s brake lights did not come on during the crash. The CCTV also caught two people getting out of the Maserati after the accident.
A witness, Mr. C, told MBC that the fleeing car didn’t slow down and sped away with an even louder engine sound. Another witness, Mr. D, said the motorcycle driver (Mr. A) looked up after a few minutes and asked, "Is my girlfriend dead?"
The Maserati driver and a passenger abandoned the car about 500 meters away from the accident scene and ran away. Earlier, around 3 AM, the same Maserati was seen speeding alongside a company car Mercedes in the Sangmu district of Gwangju.
Police revealed that the Maserati was a company car but had a white license plate instead of a green one.
A police official said they plan to identify and arrest the driver for hit-and-run resulting in death under the law that imposes harsher penalties for specific serious crimes.
