Korean summers can be brutal. You get heat, humidity, and the occasional monsoons too. But thankfully, there are several dishes that’ll help you cool down in a flash.
1. Naengmyeon
Translated as cold noodles, Naengmyeon is a staple summer dish in Korea. Made with a delicious frozen broth paired with buckwheat noodles, cucumbers, and a boiled egg, this dish will have you feeling refreshed in no time.
2. Kong-guksu
Don’t let its appearance scare you; this creamy soy bean soup is much more delicious than it looks. You can make it sweet or savory by adding sugar or salt.
3. Patbingsu
Korea’s shaved ice is a beloved dessert, traditionally served with red bean, shaved ice, sweetened condensed milk, and small pieces of mochi. This dish is the perfect go-to dessert for the hotter seasons.
4. Hwachae
You’ve probably seen this dish go viral on social media, and it’s no wonder. It combines so many different flavors and textures. Just add Sprite, strawberry milk, your favorite fruits, ice, sweetened condensed milk, and anything else you want.
5. Jjolmyeon
A dry, saucy noodle dish, you’ve probably seen stars like Yoo Jae Suk, a known noodle lover, slurping on this dish in one of his variety programs. It’s spicy, sweet, and tangy. Add a touch of sliced cucumbers, and you’ll want this dish every day of the week.
6. Naeng-jjamppong
Koreans love anything spicy, especially during the hotter seasons, as it’s supposed to help relieve the stress and heat from your body. While traditional jjamppong is steaming hot, there is now a cold version similar to naengmyeon. You get the lovely taste of seafood and spice without the hot temperature.
7. Sikhye
There’s a reason why so many Koreans drink sikhye while at the jjimjjilbang. It’s refreshing, sweet, and the perfect drink after sweating out bullets in the sauna. While you can find this drink anywhere and everywhere nowadays, it hits differently after you’ve been in the summer heat all day.
8. Memil-guksu
If you can’t tell by now, Koreans love having noodles during the summer seasons. Another great dish to try is memil-guksu, made of cold buckwheat noodles topped with thinly cut seaweed and a delicious umami broth. Similar in appearance to naengmyeon, it offers a different taste and flavor of Korea.
