Korean Regions by Food: What is Jeju Island known for?

Have you ever heard of Jeju Island? It's a stunning island located in the southernmost part of South Korea, and it's known for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. With its pristine beaches, lush forests, and scenic hiking trails, it's no wonder that Jeju Island has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Often referred to as the "Hawaii of Korea," Jeju Island boasts a unique blend of traditional Korean culture and modern attractions. Visitors can explore ancient temples, learn about the island's volcanic history, and sample the delicious local cuisine. The island is also home to several museums and art galleries, showcasing some of the best of Korean art and history.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach vacation, an adventurous hiking expedition, or a cultural exploration of Korea's rich heritage, Jeju Island has something to offer for everyone. It's no surprise that this hidden gem has become one of the most beloved destinations in all of South Korea.

Some references in Korean pop culture include Lee Hyori's residence on Jeju Island -- she even filmed "Hyori's Bed & Breakfast" at her own home on Jeju Island, showcasing the island.

Jeju Island holds a special place in the hearts of many South Korean celebrities, including Soyou, SEVENTEEN's Seungkwan, and Oh My Girl's Mimi, all of whom were born on the island. These talented stars often speak fondly of their hometown and proudly represent Jeju Island in their respective fields.

When it comes to experiencing the full essence of Jeju Island, one simply cannot overlook the cuisine. South Korea is renowned for its diverse and delicious food culture, and Jeju Island is no exception. Despite its small size, the island boasts a rich culinary heritage, with unique specialties that will tantalize your taste buds.

In this article, we'll be exploring some of the most famous foods from Jeju Island. Whether you're a fan of seafood, meat dishes, or vegetarian cuisine, there's something for everyone to savor. From the island's signature black pork and fresh seafood to its delectable tangerines and green tea, Jeju Island's culinary offerings are truly one of a kind.

So, if you're planning a visit to Jeju Island, make sure to add these must-try foods to your list.

1) Black Pig Pork Belly

One of the most famous food staples you can try when visiting Jeju Island is Jeju's signature black pork belly. The pork belly itself is already such a famous food in South Korea, but why Jeju's signature black pork belly? The thick cut that Jeju's Korean BBQ places serve makes the texture extra chewy and fatty, and the flavor is savorier than ever. Unlike many KBBQ restaurants in South Korea, servers will also grill the black pork belly for you so it'll be cooked just how it should be, giving it an even better experience. These black pigs are raised on Jeju Island, so you'll know that the meat is fresh, and as a person who's visited this island, it definitely tastes different, so you'll want to check it out for sure.

2) Gogi Guksoo (Meat Noodles)

Literally dubbed "meat noodles," gogi guksoo is another staple of Jeju Island that cannot be missed. A tub of noodles in rich pork broth and filled with Korean-style chashu, this dish is something to crave especially on a cold day. It also pairs well with a glass of Soju as the broth will just make you feel so happy!

3) Hallasan Soju

Have you ever seen Hallasan Soju? There are lots of different brands of Soju, and each city is known to have its own signature soju -- Jeju Island brags the Hallasan Soju, available in 17% and 21%. Soju connoisseurs can taste the slightest difference amongst brands and they say that Hallasan bought in Jeju tastes different than Hallasan bought in Seoul. A meal in South Korea is never complete without a glass of Soju, so make sure to try the Hallasan Soju, named after the volcano that shaped this very island!

4) Abalone

Jeju is blessed as it is surrounded by nothing but ocean, so you know that you want to check out some fresh seafood. A highly praised seafood is abalone, and you can have it fresh, cooked or however you want it! Abalone is known to be an expensive seafood and of course just because you're in Jeju, it doesn't make it any chceaper -- but you can have some of the freshest abalones in the country right here at Jeju Island!

5) Green Tea

That's right -- Jeju is known for having some of the best green tea in the country. The island even has a museum called the "Osulloc Museum," named after the brand, and Jeju Island has green tea leaf fields all across the island! Osulloc is already a popular green tea brand in South Korea, but if you want to see where all the magic happens, check it out at Jeju.

6) Seafood Ramyun

Koreans love putting anything in their ramyun as a topping, so why not use the freshest ingredient that the island has to offer? This island is surrounded by water, so you'll see plenty of fresh seafood all across the island. Whatever seafood you want, add that to your favorite K-ramyun, and you'll have some of the most refreshing broth ever. People put in crab legs, oysters, mussels, abalone, squid, and octopus and the taste of the soup won't taste so instant after that! Ramyun may be a simple, instant food item, but pair it with Jeju seafood, and you've got yourself a feast.

Has this post made your mouth watering yet? Jeju is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in South Korea, and one of the reasons why it's so great is because of its food. The food here all has culture and history and Jeju folks are damn proud of that. If you ever get a chance to visit this great island, make sure to try all of their cuisine and embrace the beautiful island with all you've got.

What are your thoughts on this list? Is there a food dish that you're particularly interested in? Or is there a Jeju specialty that you know that didn't make this list? Make sure to let us know in the comments below!
