When you fly into South Korea, you will notice that you're not flying into the country's capital Seoul, but a city called Incheon. Incheon is a beautiful city in South Korea that's located near the ocean, and it is also home to South Korea's biggest airport -- Incheon International Airport.
Incheon is located approximately one hour from Seoul via car, and you can also get to Incheon easily, thanks to Korea's outstanding public transportation system. There are subway and bus options to get you to almost any part of Incheon, including the airport.
Incheon is also the hometown of many Korean celebrities as well, such as HYNN, Lovelyz's Kei, IVE's Gaeul, Kwon Nara, (G)I-DLE's Miyeon, SHINee's Minho, Ben, VIVIZ's Umji, Ong Seong Woo, WJSN's Eunseo, Urban Zakapa's Hyuna, Huh Gak, Hyorin and Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon.
Incheon is also very proud of the food that the city offers -- there are many great cuisines that Incheon specializes in. Folks in Incheon have tremendous pride in their city, and food happens to be one of the factors that contribute to their pride. Today, we'll check out some foods that are must-tries in Incheon. So if you're ever staying in Incheon, we highly recommend you check these cuisines out!
Jjajangmyeon
Incheon is home to Korea's biggest Chinatown, and Incheon just has great jjajangmyeon throughout the city. The city opened up their ports in 1883, and ever since then, Chinese people have fled to this part of the country and made a presence ever since then. If you're a big fan of jjajangmyun, make sure to check out Incheon's Chinatown!
Jjolmyeon
Jjolmyeon is wonderful Korean cuisine, and it's just what you need on a hot summer day. In the 1970s, a naengmyun factory in Incheon accidentally created thicker noodles, and they thought it was too wasteful to just throw out, so they gave it away to a nearby bunsik restaurant in Incheon, and from there, the rest is history, and the first jjolmyeon was created!
Washbasin Naengmyun
It just seems like Incheon is all about noodles! While we all love our traditional naengmyun, have you ever had naengmyun in a washbasin bowl? The portions are nearly double the regular size of a naengmyun, and the steel bowl helps keep the dish colder for a longer amount of time! It's also important to note that there's usually no meat, and instead, they put young radish kimchi instead.
Salted Shrimp Kalbi Stew
Koreans love using salted shrimp as a form of seasoning on many of their dishes as it provides a lot of deep flavors, and in Incheon, they utilize salted shrimp to make a kalbi stew! Typically, this dish would also have water parsley, onions, zucchini, and other vegetables to add to the flavor. It's a very clean taste because there's not a lot of seasoning that goes in besides the salted shrimp, yet tastes perfectly delicious!
Fresh Seafood
A big perk about Incheon is that the city is located next to the ocean, so seafood is pretty much guaranteed to be fresh anywhere in the city. If you're a huge seafood connoisseur, make sure to check out local markets for the freshest seafood. Each part of Incheon also has its specialty. Songdo is known for its blue crabs, East Incheon is known for its mackerel, Yonghyundong is known for monkfish, and Manseokdong is known for the webfoot octopus.
Incheon truly has a little bit of everything when it comes to food. They're located near the coastline, so you should expect lots of wind on any given day, but Incheon is truly a charming city with lots to offer. Since it's also accessible via public transportation, you should definitely have this place as a city to visit without taking the highway bus down!
