One North Korean defector shared some of his honest thoughts about South Korean society from the perspective of someone who has been newly exposed to it.
Mr. Kim Jung Kook revealed that he had fled from North Korea six years ago and settled down in the new country. During the period, he was able to experience South Korean society from a completely different perspective than those who were born into it.
The thing he pointed out about South Korean society was that it is very stimulation-seeking, as in the people in it always seek something to stimulate the senses. He explained, "I think [South Korean society] is very stimulation-seeking. They like tasting stimulating flavors, and I am also getting used to that."
One of the things he explained that was shocking about South Korean society is the swearing culture. He explained, "People here curse in a very stimulating, provoking manner...and there is no limit. They go all out."
He continued to elaborate, "When I play games, I play LOL (League of Legends) and they curse a lot in the chat. What's interesting is in North Korea, people would never curse about your parents. When I first came, people would swear curses about people's parents so I would think 'there is such a curse?' People might think North Korean cursing might be strong but I think it's strong but it's innocent and pure. But here, people are out to kill people with words."
He also criticized that people are exposed to different stimulating and provocative media content, so he feels the need to ease off a bit. Therefore, he thought that South Korean society is a very stimulating society.
However, it wasn't only Kim Jung Kook's opinion that Korean society is too stimulating. South Koreans also agree that there are too many aspects of South Korean society that are stimulating. Many commented, "I don't disagree, our society is so prone to these provocative and stimulating things," "All the things he said about our society is so correct," "I really agree with everything he said," "Our society having the tendency to curse severely, causing fights, and slandering without checking the facts first is a real problem," "This man said all the right things," and, "I think the cursing is getting worse and worse. They use curses really to kill people with words."
Even foreigners that are into Korean entertainment know this about knetzs. SMH
I mean, how many celebrities have had to kill themselves over constant bullying and malicious comments online???
And I agree that it's getting worse!!
