T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun) has sparked attention by personally sharing his thoughts on his portrayal of the character "Thanos" in the Netflix drama 'Squid Game 2.'
On January 28, a video titled 'T.O.P. Reacts to Thanos' Best Scenes' was uploaded to Netflix Korea's online channel.
Choi Seung Hyun revealed that he had extensive discussions with the director about the Thanos character, stating, "I wanted to design and create a unique, never-before-seen character. I used gestures that were outdated and exaggerated to make viewers feel uncomfortable and unsure about whether they find him annoying or cringey. I wanted viewers to sense an odd vibe from him."
He added, "If you look at Thanos's lines, he uses many phrases that are old-fashioned for his age. For example, 'You're lecturing me when you ended up in this shithole too?' From those lines, you can infer that Thanos the rapper is stuck in the past. He worked actively in the 2000s before his career fell apart."
T.O.P confessed he put in effort to portray Thanos as a "more cringey" character. He shared, "I talked with the director to find ways for Thanos to come off as more cringey. So I tried to maximize his expressions."
While watching his rap performance as Thanos in 'Squid Game 2,' T.O.P admitted, "I'm really cringing," reflecting on the scene where he raps in front of Kang Mi Na (played by Song Ji Woo). He said, "I've rapped for more than 20 years of my life, but I’ve never rapped for a woman to get her attention." He added with a laugh, "So, I was nearly losing my mind while filming this scene."
T.O.P also explained that he planned Thanos' rap. He elaborated, "The rap in the original script was longer and had more words, but the director told me to freely imagine what kind of rap Thanos would perform, and then we discussed it together." He continued, "I thought it would be better to keep the word count low. I filmed a video on my phone and sent it to him, and we discussed doing over-the-top gestures." Thanks to his efforts, the character of Thanos left a strong impression on viewers.
Meanwhile, the 'Squid Game' series is set to conclude with Season 3, which is expected to be released in 2025.
