On January 18, Hwang Garam, a contestant on KBS2’s 'Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend' (Episode 689), opened up about his difficult past, including homelessness and extreme financial struggles, while sharing his gratitude for his appearance on the show.
The episode is part of the ‘2025 New Year Special 1: Celebrities Edition Kim Hae Sook Part 2,’ where talented artists such as Jung Young Joo, Onestar, Hwang Garam, LA POEM, and Jung Ji So pay tribute to the beloved actress Kim Hae Sook.
Hwang, who is making his debut appearance on 'Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend,' reflected on the hardships he faced after leaving his hometown of Masan to pursue his dream of becoming a singer in Seoul. He began by confessing, “I lived as a homeless person for a long time,” and explained, “It started with spending nights in Hongdae Playground and eventually sleeping on benches, which led to my homelessness.”
Having worked numerous part-time jobs, Hwang shared that he once spent all of his savings to rent a warehouse instead of a home. He lived among piles of trash, unable to wash due to the lack of a bathroom, which led to skin problems. He also mentioned, “I lost so much weight and got down to 48kg because it was not a place where a person could live properly.” His heartbreaking story left viewers in sympathy.
Hwang, who gained recognition for his song 'I Am a Firefly,' expressed his deep gratitude for the improvements in his life. “Thanks to my fans and supporters, I’ve been able to reduce my part-time delivery work,” he said. “It's still surreal to think that I’m standing on the Immortal Songs stage, a show I watched when I debuted in 2011.” With his hands together, he offered his thanks and showed his appreciation for the opportunity.
'Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend 'airs every Saturday at 6:05 PM on KBS 2TV.
