BLACKPINK’s Jisoo shares her efforts for action scenes in ‘Newtopia’.
On January 7th KST, a press conference for the Coupang Play series ‘Newtopia’ was held at the Conrad Seoul Hotel in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. The event was attended by cast members Park Jung Min and Jisoo, along with director Yoon Sung Hyun.
Jisoo, who plays Yeongju, spoke about what drew her to the project: “I’ve watched many zombie-themed shows, but this script stood out. It’s not just about the zombie incidents; there are vibrant, colorful events interwoven into the story. It felt like a fresh take on the genre, and I was curious. The character Yeongju was incredibly appealing, as she’s someone who grows and evolves through the story. I didn’t hesitate to take on this role.”
For ‘Newtopia’, Jisoo attended an action school to prepare for her physical scenes. “At first, I couldn’t even do a forward roll properly. I would roll once and then stop to look around. But with consistent practice, I got to a point where I could do five forward rolls in a row. Backward rolls were still challenging, though,” she admitted, laughing. “Training at the action school really helped me build stamina, which was a huge help during the action shoots.”
‘Newtopia’ follows soldier Jae-yoon (Park Jung Min) and his girlfriend Yeongju (Jisoo), a “gomsin” waiting for her boyfriend during his military service, as they navigate zombie-infested Seoul in an effort to reunite. Directed by Yoon Sung Hyun of Bleak Night and Time to Hunt, the series promises to deliver a unique take on zombie dramas, incorporating elements of comedy and unexpected twists.
The series will premiere on February 7th at 8 PM on Coupang Play. It will also be available in over 240 countries and territories through Prime Video.
