K-pop group NewJeans has stated in response to ADOR's recent lawsuit seeking to confirm the validity of their exclusive contract. The group criticized ADOR's actions, calling them "irrational and inhumane," especially given the breakdown in trust and contractual violations.
In a statement released on December 6, NewJeans members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein expressed their dismay, stating, "Forcing us to work for an additional five years despite the collapse of our trust and ADOR's breaches of contract is not only unreasonable but also inhumane."
The members further argued that ADOR has failed to adequately claim there were no breaches of the exclusive contract, repeatedly insisting that the termination is impossible until the company's support and investment are recouped. "We have already returned profits exceeding the initial investment to ADOR and HYBE," NewJeans stated.
NewJeans also accused HYBE of attempting to undermine their value through malicious activities and reverse marketing, with ADOR allegedly allowing such actions under new management. "It's as if the company, which is supposed to protect us, is producing its negative comments," they claimed.
According to NewJeans, the exclusive contract stipulates that if ADOR fails to fulfill its contractual obligations, the contract can be terminated. "As outlined in the exclusive contract, there is no longer a reason to work with ADOR and HYBE," they emphasized.
The group declared, "As of November 29, 2024, we are no longer affiliated with ADOR. ADOR cannot interfere with or intervene in our activities."
Earlier, on November 13, NewJeans had sent a notice to ADOR, demanding the rectification of contract violations, including the return of former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin, within 14 days or face termination of the contract.
Subsequently, on November 28, the group held an emergency press conference at 8:30 PM, stating, "NewJeans is an artist under ADOR, and ADOR is obligated to protect NewJeans. However, ADOR has neither the will nor the capability to protect us." They formally announced the termination of their contract effective November 29.
On December 3, ADOR filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Central District Court seeking to confirm the validity of the exclusive contract. ADOR explained, "We made this unavoidable decision to clarify to both the artist and various stakeholders that an exclusive contract cannot be lightly terminated based on one-sided claims."
