In an unusual turn of events, certain right-wing netizens in South Korea have reportedly filed complaints with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) against singer IU, along with other celebrities who expressed support for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. However, the CIA has rejected emails from users who repeatedly sent the same reports.

On the 24th, a user identified as A shared a screenshot of an email from the CIA on platform X (formerly Twitter), claiming, "The CIA has taken action. It's official." A further statement claimed that an overwhelming number of reports from South Korea had astonished the CIA, alleging, "An average of 20,000 to 30,000 reports must have been filed, potentially affecting ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) approvals."

The controversy dates back to IU’s involvement in a recent political issue. On the 14th, during a rally in Yeouido, Seoul, calling for the impeachment of President Yoon, IU made headlines for pre-paying at local restaurants and cafes to provide warmth and sustenance to attendees braving the cold. Following this, A claimed to have reported IU’s charitable act to the CIA, framing it as politically subversive.

Some right-wing netizens extended their efforts by organizing boycotts against brands endorsed by IU and compiling lists of public figures supporting impeachment to report to the CIA. Their goal appears to be labeling these individuals as “pro-North Korean forces” to complicate their U.S. entry processes or block their ESTA approvals.

However, contrary to A’s claims, the email from the CIA indicated that A's reports were being rejected. The CIA explained, “You have submitted too many reports too quickly. Only one report per 10 minutes is allowed from the same computer. This policy is designed to reduce report spamming. If your second submission was intended to add or clarify information in the first report, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

Observers noted that A likely misunderstood the email’s content. Moreover, the U.S. State Department, not the CIA, handles visa and immigration-related matters.

This incident has sparked widespread online discussions, with many ridiculing the impracticality and inaccuracy of such attempts to involve foreign intelligence agencies in domestic political disputes.
