Actor Yoo Ah In’s first appeal trial for drug charges begins.
On the morning of October 29 KST, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 5 will hold the first appeal trial for actor Yoo Ah In, who was indicted on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
Yoo Ah In is accused of habitually administering medical propofol on 181 occasions, for which he received a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 2 million won in the first trial. The court acknowledged habitual drug procurement charges, while finding him not guilty due to lack of evidence on allegations of marijuana smoking and obstruction of evidence.
Yoo Ah In, whose detention period was extended, will attend the appeal trial in custody. Under current law, the detention period for an unconvicted defendant is limited to two months, but it can be extended twice for up to two months each if the court deems it necessary. During the first trial, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced him to one year in prison, citing flight risk.
Prosecutors, who sought a four-year sentence in the initial trial, filed an appeal immediately after the verdict. The appeal hearing will focus on whether Yoo Ah In acknowledges all the charges this time.
Yoo Ah In is alleged to have habitually administered four types of medical drugs under the guise of sedation for cosmetic procedures. He denies other charges, including unauthorized prescriptions under others’ names, attempts to destroy evidence, and encouraging acquaintances to use marijuana.
