**The Film ‘Victory’ Experiences a Resurgence in Box Office Rankings, Thanks to Positive Reviews and Lead Actress Lee Hyeri’s Tireless Promotion**
The movie "Victory" has continued its strong box office performance into its fourth week, maintaining a spot in the rankings. Positive reviews, combined with lead actress Hyeri’s passionate promotion, have contributed to its sustained success.
Released on August 14th, "Victory" tells the story of the “Millennium Girls,” a novice cheerleading club that cheers everyone on through energetic dances and popular songs. The movie is based on the true story of the "Saebitdeul" cheerleading team from Geoje High School, established in 1984.
The film, first unveiled to the public through a press screening, received praise for its heartwarming story of hope and encouragement, nostalgic setting and music, and the actors’ performances. However, it faced tough competition from the start. Released on the same day as "Pilot", one of the summer's biggest box office hits, "Victory" also had to compete with three other films.
With a limited number of available theaters, "Victory" initially struggled to attract attention. However, despite the slow growth in audience numbers, viewer ratings consistently rose. Since its release, "Victory" has maintained an impressive 96-99% on CGV’s Golden Egg rating system (out of 100), making it the highest-rated film among those released at the same time (excluding concert films).
No one was more disappointed by the film’s initial performance than those involved in its creation, particularly lead actress Hyeri, who has shown immense affection for the project since the beginning.
A week after the film’s release, Hyeri shared a heartfelt message on her personal social media: “We might be facing the end sooner than expected, but I will hold on until the very last moment and thank each person individually. Thank you for sharing such precious feelings with me. Because of you, I didn’t break down.” Despite her sadness, she added, “I will start tomorrow with hope in my heart.”
True to her word, Hyeri threw herself back into promoting the film. Beyond her official promotional duties, she personally expanded her schedule to promote "Victory". Even after her official engagements ended, she appeared on YouTube variety shows, radio programs, and uploaded more content on social media. She also engaged in guerrilla fan meet-and-greet events, signed autographs, and took pictures with fans.
Typically, lead actors find it challenging to handle official promotional duties, not out of a lack of responsibility, but due to the sheer time commitment required. For Hyeri to take on additional promotional activities beyond her official schedule is unprecedented. Furthermore, she is currently in the middle of filming the drama "Friendly Competition". According to her agency, she manages to promote the film during breaks in her drama shooting.
Hyeri’s sincerity resonated with audiences. As her behind-the-scenes promotional efforts became a hot topic on social media and online communities, they sparked public curiosity and emotional responses. Word of mouth, combined with the already well-reviewed film, led to an increase in theatergoers, driving "Victory" back up the box office rankings. Previously ranking around 7th or 8th daily, the film jumped to 5th on September 2nd, and even reached 4th place on September 3rd.
On September 5th, "Victory" surpassed 400,000 viewers. While this may not seem like a huge number, considering the current sluggish state of the theater industry and the fact that most Korean films released around the same time have fallen off the charts, it is a remarkable achievement. The seat occupancy rate, a key indicator of immediate interest in a film, is also around 10%.
Lee Hyeri is well aware of these developments. Speaking to "Ilgan Sports", she said, “I was so happy to hear that "Victory" was making a comeback in the rankings,” and expressed her gratitude to the audience.
She added, “I wanted more people to enjoy "Victory" together and wanted to spend more time with fans who I hadn’t seen in person for a while, which is why I started the guerrilla events. But as I was doing them, I felt like I was the one being cheered on.”
Hyeri also remarked, “As interest in the movie grows, I’m even more excited to meet future audiences,” and encouraged continued support for "Victory".
