TWICE’s agency announces legal action against illegal deepfake videos.
On August 30th, TWICE’s agency, JYP Entertainment, issued a statement through the TWICE FANS app, declaring their intention to take legal action against the spread of illegal deepfake videos featuring their artists.
JYP Entertainment stated, “We are taking the current situation involving the spread of deepfake videos targeting our artists very seriously.” The company further explained, “This is a clear illegal act, and we are currently collecting all relevant materials. We are working with a specialized law firm to pursue strong legal action without any leniency.”
The agency emphasized, “We will not tolerate any actions that infringe on our artists’ rights and will respond firmly and resolutely until the end.”
The term ‘deepfake’ is a combination of ‘deep learning’ and ‘fake’ and generally refers to a synthetic technology based on artificial intelligence that can alter the face of a person in a video to make it appear as if someone else is present. It allows for the creation of videos where a person’s face is swapped with another’s, making it look realistic.
Even a few photos of a person can be used to create realistic expressions and movements, making celebrities and influencers, who have many publicly available photos, particularly vulnerable to this kind of abuse.
In response, the police began intensive crackdowns on August 28th, and the prosecutors and police plan to strengthen their investigation personnel and organizations to sternly address deepfake sex crimes. The Korean government held a ‘Deepfake Sex Crime Response Government Measures Meeting’ on the same day and announced that they would prepare comprehensive countermeasures by October.
