Rolling Quartz is a five-member group, composed of Arem, Iree, Yeongeun, Jayoung, and Hyunjung, that debuted in 2020 with the single “Blaze.” The song marked the start of the all-female rock band’s journey, forging a name for themselves in the ever-evolving industry.
Fast forward to 2024, the quintet now has four single albums and two mini-albums, in addition to their special singles, under their catchy discography. ‘Victory’ is their second mini-album, and is their latest offering, released June 19th, which features the songs “Victory,” “ONE,” “Stand Up,” and “Red Wine.”
After concluding their 2024 tour in Europe, the band is scheduled to head to Australia for a show in Melbourne and Sydney on September 6th and 8th, respectively. Tickets are still available on BoxLiveAu’s website.
Two years after our first interview with the band, allkpop reunited with Rolling Quartz to discuss how the past years were for them and the development they’ve seen in themselves. Read our exclusive interview with the band below!
Shout-out to allkpop readers:
allkpop: First of all since we’re halfway through 2024, how would you describe your first six months of 2024?
Jayoung: We already have finished our Europe tour during the last six months. We were also preparing for our new album (‘Victory’) which just came out! [Note: The interview was conducted before the album release, and during the time, Rolling Quartz was in the final preparations for the album.]
allkpop: This year marks your fourth anniversary! What’s one moment from your career thus far that you often look back on?
Arem: I think that the memorable part is our first album and its music video filming. “Blaze” music video was really hard [to film]. It was really hard. I still feel like there is nothing harder than our first music video filming.
(members laugh)
Yeongeun: Why was it hard?
Arem: It was so cold.
Yeongeun: Right, it was cold.
Jayoung: You're right!
Iree: It was below freezing and snowing.
Jayoung: We filmed for 24 hours straight. It was possible because we were young, right? (laughs)
Hyunjung: It was our first music video shoot, so we didn't know what to expect. I went without knowing anything. I wore thin clothes.
Jayoung: Right! You could see my stomach. (laughs)
allkpop: You’ve been touring for a while now. What do you usually do to unwind in between the tour dates?
Jayoung: We always have to move from one country to another country in most of our schedules, so we didn’t have that much time for resting. But when we are in the car or airplane, I usually listen to music and just watch the views pass by the window. (Arem and Jayoung laugh) My mind becomes cleaner when I do that.
Arem: Between our schedule during the tour in Europe and Australia, we don't have that much time to take a rest because we were also working on the album at the same time. We also have had performances in Korea, so we didn't have time to rest. We are always working and performing!
allkpop: Could you share with us your routines and preparations before taking the stage?
HyunJung: Before the day of our performance, I always sharpen my guitar’s strings and then I’ll go to sleep!
YeongEun: Playing the drums requires my body; playing it has to do with all of my body, so I usually do stretching. I do that once I wake up on the performance day.
Arem: I try not to practice as much as possible on the day of the performance, because if I practice a lot, I will be too tired. My energy will be coming out.
Jayoung: (laughs) How do you do that?
Yeongeun: What did you say?
Jayoung: Just a little bit, just a little bit? Are your hands cramped? (laughs)
Arem: My hands are cramped. (laughs) I just practice a little bit. Just a little bit.
allkpop: Since this interview is specifically for your shows in Australia, I wanted to ask if you have visited Australia before. What are some things on your bucket list that you want to do if you have free time?
Jayoung: Have we visited Australia before?
All members: Not yet!
Jayoung: We have never gone to Australia, so we are really excited and we are looking forward to visiting it!
Iree: My parents went to Australia and have visited a lot of places there, so I’m really excited to visit the same places my family visited. So, after the show, once we come back to Korea, I’m going to talk about the trip with my family!
YeongEun: I really like animals a lot and I heard that Australia has a Zoo, so I'm really excited! If I get time, I would like to visit a Zoo and just look at the animals!
allkpop: What kind of performances should your fans in Australia look forward to? How have the preparations been for this tour?
Jayoung: We have prepared a song by a famous Australian rock band for the cover stage, so I hope the fans will look forward to our cover stage!
allkpop: Since you’ll be celebrating your fourth anniversary this year, how would you describe your growth, your 2020 self vs 2024 self? In what ways do you think you’ve changed or improved?
Arem: At first, I didn't think that we, Rolling Quartz, were really new, that we were really young. But now in the year 2024, I look back at our first video and I still think, “Oh, we are so cute! We are like babies!” (members laugh) But if you look at our new album and the music video that we filmed and just came out, we feel that we have really grown a lot. We feel like adults now!
HyunJung: I think that my guitar skills have shown a lot of improvement since I debuted compared to now!
YeongEun: At first, we didn't have fans, so we were really not that confident. (members fake cry) But now, we have a lot of fans from all over the world, so we now have a lot of confidence, especially on stage!
allkpop: Do you have anything else to add?
Jayoung: This is our first time to visit and perform in Australia, so we are really looking forward to bringing all the happiness to all our fans there. And we hope that our fans will look forward to our performance!
