A famous trot singer, who has frequently ranked high in popular auditions, is under suspicion as the usage of the substantial fan donations gathered for their birthday remains unclear.
Fans of the well-known trot singer A recently held a birthday party near the concert venue after a performance in Chuncheon. After the second part of the concert, around 300 attendees traveled about 10 minutes by car to a location set up for a separate celebration with A.
The leaders of A’s fan club collected donations under the name of "birthday support" until two days before the concert. According to TV Daily’s investigation, a total of 2.1514 billion KRW (approximately $1,570,000 USD) was raised through two accounts, with 481 participants donating amounts ranging from 30,000 KRW ($22 USD) to 30 million KRW ($22,000 USD).
The fan club management created a competitive atmosphere by disclosing the nicknames, regions, and donation amounts of those who contributed.
Since these were birthday donations, they were supposed to be used for A’s birthday gifts. However, the large amount's exact usage was not disclosed.
The birthday party itself was held in strict privacy. The fan club announced the event while prohibiting entry to ordinary people and YouTubers, and also banned the use of cell phones inside the venue to prevent any details from leaking out.
Fans who did not attend the event speculated about the use of the donations, with guesses ranging from luxury cars to bundles of cash. These suspicions were partly based on a previous post by the fan club management, suggesting a luxury car as a meaningful gift for A due to their physical stature and long-distance travels.
The cash bundle suspicion arose from a similar fundraising event before A’s first fan meeting in April, where 54 million KRW ($39,400 USD) was collected, but no clear explanation of the usage was provided.
Some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the secretive nature of the event and the lack of transparency regarding the use of donations. One fan questioned the necessity of such closed meetings and stringent conditions, including wearing name pins and handing over cell phones.
Other fans commented on the frequent support events and the financial burden it places on them. A fan from Gwangyang expressed frustration, saying they couldn't stay in the fan club without money, while another fan from Seoul questioned why they were not informed about the use of the donations they helped raise.
A’s agency, when asked about the situation, stated that the fan club operates independently and they have no detailed knowledge of its activities. The agency clarified that there has been no interaction with the fan club since its management expelled company representatives years ago.
A debuted in 2012 with a single album and gained fame after winning a major trot audition show in 2021. They expanded their fanbase by placing in the top 3 of another trot audition on a comprehensive programming channel last year. However, A has also faced controversies, including allegations of school bullying during their career.
