Hwang Jung Min, a renowned actor, is making a much-anticipated return to the theatrical stage after a two-year break. The production company announced the casting lineup for the play 'Macbeth', which is set to open this July. Alongside Hwang Jung-min, the cast includes prominent actors such as Kim So-jin, Song Il-gook, Song Young-chang, and Nam Yoon-ho.
This marks Hwang's first theatrical appearance since his 2022 performance in 'Richard III' and his first in a new play since 2019’s 'Oedipus'. Directed by Yang Jung-woong, known for his sophisticated mise-en-scène and modern interpretations of classics, the production promises a fresh take on Shakespeare's tragedy. Yang previously directed 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', garnering acclaim for his unique approach. The stage design will be handled by Yeoshin Dong, a celebrated set designer and recipient of the Yegreen Musical Award for Stage Art. Dong's involvement is highly anticipated, especially considering the acclaim she has received in the national theater scene.
Producer Kim Mi-hye, who won the Producer Award at the 7th Korea Musical Awards for 'Mrs. Doubtfire', is also part of the team. She has been instrumental in leading Sam Company's series of plays, which include notable productions such as 'Harold and Maude', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Richard III', 'Oedipus', and 'Faust'.
'Macbeth', based on the novel of the same name, is one of Shakespeare’s four major tragedies. It explores the life of Scottish King Macbeth and themes of human desire and ambition. This production is the sixth installment in Sam Company’s repertoire of dramatic works.
The play 'Macbeth' will run from July 13 to August 18 at the National Theater's Haerum Theater.
