Highlight's Kikwang has addressed the dialect controversy surrounding his role in the hit drama 'Marry My Husband.'
During a recent appearance on 'Strong Heart VS,' Kikwang discussed his experience working on the series, which had just concluded.
Kikwang, who played Park Min Young's first love, humbly downplayed his contribution to the show's success, stating, "I played a small and minor role in the drama and didn't do anything significant."
When Jun Hyun Moo mentioned that the drama ranked first on Amazon Prime globally, Kikwang responded candidly, "My followers increased by 40,000, and the engagement (likes and comments) of my posts increased by about 3-4 times. It would have been better if it increased even more."
Addressing the question of how he prepared for the role, given that his primary profession is a singer, Kikwang emphasized the importance of skincare. He explained, "On stage, you can't see pores or wrinkles due to the constant movement. But in a drama, every detail is visible – from the face to the expression and even eye movements. So, I focused a lot on skincare, drank lots of water, and took good care of myself."
Kikwang also talked about filming a scene in Cheonggyecheon (famous stream in Seoul), where his character loudly confesses his love in a dialect. He revealed filming the scene made him nervous. He shared, "My character uses a dialect and there was a scene where I confessed my feelings where I shouted 'I like you.' We were filming at Cheonggyecheon which was filled with couples and I was sweating so much on my back."
Kikwang, originally from Gwangju, Jeolla Province, admitted that speaking in a Gyeongsang (Busan) dialect was challenging. He said, "I'm not used to the accent or the lines, so it was difficult."
Additionally, Kikwang hinted at Highlight's comeback, stating, "I've finished filming a music video and prepared for a short-form challenge with a vibe targeting millennials and Gen Z."
When asked whether he would prefer to be the male lead in 'Marry My Husband 2' or sell a million copies of Highlight's album, Kikwang responded, "I prefer the team doing well. Even if there's a season 2 of 'Marry My Husband,' I won't be the lead because Na In Woo's there."
I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. Kikwang did a great job with his role of a chef who spoke with a dialect. *clap clap*
