[UPDATE: MBC has deleted the tweet.]
On January 21, MBC's twitter account posted a photo of Newjeans Minji's departure from Incheon International Airport to attend Paris fashion week.
The caption translated to "NewJeans Minji, Sharp beauty, international elegance," which might have been seen as normal for international fans. However, Korean citizens noticed that the phrase 'Kal-Guk-Su' was embedded in the caption through an acrostic poem.
Minji recently apologized for a previous incident where she had mentioned not knowing what kalguksu, a popular Korean noodle dish during a webtoon artist Lee Mal Nyeon's YouTube channel appearance in January 2023. At that time, she had shared that she was a picky eater and had never tried kalguksu before. This led to some criticism and accusations that she was pretending not to know kalguksu for the sake of her idol image.
Following MBC's controversial caption about Minji, the issue quickly escalated to a hot topic on Theqoo. This prompted both Korean and international fans to express their displeasure, calling for apologies from article writer Go Dae Hyun and MBC.
Here are the improved formats for the quotes:
1. "How dare you bully a 19-year-old over noodles? MBC, apologize to Minji. #GoDaeHyunApologizetoMinji"
2. "HYBE boycotts MBC for years for treating their artists badly. MBC apologizes, and the next thing they decide to do is make fun of Minji."
3. "Genuinely jaw-dropping that someone would write something as distasteful as this. MBC, APOLOGIZE TO MINJI. #GoDaeHyunApologizetoMinji"
4. "Do you know how much stress that f*cking soup caused her? Idiots. MBC APOLOGIZE TO MINJI. #GoDaeHyunApologizetoMinji"
5. "Stop cyberbullying her. MBC, apologize to Minji."
Meanwhile, HYBE recently patched things up with MBC after a 4-year feud with them.
How did they even find the acrostic poem hidden in the caption?!
