On January 22, the Anti-Corruption Investigation Team of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency searched and seized 'Dispatch.' They confiscated a reporting journalist's mobile phone and laptop to find the source of Lee Sung Gyun's leaked police 'incident report.'
The specific article that led to the search and seizure by the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police is titled "The straw was used to damage his image "… Lee Sun Gyun, Fragmented Testimony". This article was released on December 28, 2023, the day after the death of actor Lee Sun Gyun (December 27).
'Dispatch' pointed out issues with both police investigation and media coverage in the mentioned article. In the process, Dispatch released an 'incident report' written by the police on October 18.
Dispatch criticized, "The police prepared this report on October 18, 2023, based solely on the statements of informants Shin OO and Park OO, without verifying the facts. It is a sloppy interim report that doesn't even establish the facts."
A day after the police 'incident report,' on October 19, Gyeonggi News exclusively reported, "Top star L under investigation for drug use." Thus, Lee Sun Gyun's name was exposed to the media even before the investigation began.
In the article "The straw was used to damage his image"… Lee Sun Gyun, Fragmented Testimony'," Dispatch wrote, "Lee Sun Gyun has passed away, and the core issue lies in the police's negligence and the media reporting non-crucial information. Investigating irrelevant transcripts, edited statements regarding the circumstances, and identifying the sources responsible is crucial."
Dispatch also highlighted the different exaggerated reports made by other media outlets, such as "Lee Sun Gyun, administered drugs five times" (reported by KBS on November 24) and "Lee Sun Gyun states he "used a straw to inhale drugs and thought it was sleeping pills," (reported by JTBC on December 26).
'Dispatch' continued to state that they "released the police's 'internal report' shortly after Lee Sun Gyun's death. This document reveals the flaws in the initial investigation. The hope is that the recent search and seizure by the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police will not be used to cover up the police's shortcomings."
Dispatch stressed, "Who leaked information to 'Gyeonggi News' on October 19? Who provided the recording to KBS on November 24? On December 26, who submitted the (fragmented) statement to JTBC? We hope that a fair investigation will reveal the truth."
The news media outlet concluded, "P.S. 'Dispatch' obtained this document through a third party. It was a document that exposed the shortcomings of the initial investigation. It is crucial that the police search and seizure do not end up being a mere houseraid. Focusing on the extreme investigation and reporting behavior that led to Lee Sun Gyun's distress is necessary."
Dispatch straight out played the UNO “reverse” card on them.
