Netflix's highly-anticipated, period thriller 'Gyeongseong Creature' is receiving scathing reviews from the press and netizens alike.
A day before its global premiere, 6 episodes of 'Gyeongseong Creature' were revealed to the press on December 21. Afterward, 95% of the reviews from major K-media outlets were negative.
One media outlet criticized the "lost direction" of one of the most important characters, the "creature", as well as the poor chemistry between the story's leads, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee. Another commented, "Watching part one did not make me curious about part two."
After its premiere on Netflix, many drama fans who had eagerly awaited the new series also expressed similar disappointment.
Some felt that the choice of setting, Gyeongseong of 1945, was "meaningless" to the plot. Others showed their disappointment toward actor Park Seo Joon, claiming that his acting did not fit in with the historic setting. Some also criticized the producers for "gobbling up" a huge production budget of approximately 70 billion KRW (~ 54 million USD).
Online community users commented:
"They tried to include way too much into one piece and it just became a jumbled mess. For a period thriller set in that era, it's surprisingly boring."
"The set design was so half-done..."
"The biggest problem was Park Seo Joon TT. How could an actor with his experience spend so little time preparing for a role TTTT. His Japanese was horrible and he just didn't fit into the setting at all..."
"I thought I was watching 'What's Wrong With Secretary Kim?' but set in 1945."
"It doesn't work as a creature-thriller or a historic piece about the independence movement. It's just all over the place."
"It's literally just not very interesting. I don't really care what happens in part 2."
"Where did they spend all that money if they put so little effort into the set design?"
"All of the supporting actors are so good. Compared to them, the two leads stick out too much..."
"It was almost like Park Seo Joon's character couldn't be serious no matter how dangerous it got. It gets more awkward as the episodes go on."
"Is Park Seo Joon in some kind of slump or something? His acting is the worst it's ever been."
Part two of 'Gyeongseong Creature' is set for release on January 5.
Less than 50% for audience score is actually crazy.. especially for a Netflix series. Guess I'm not watching.
