A man has been sentenced to 35 years in jail for setting his neighbor on fire and killing him after losing a board game.
According to reports on November 25, a man in his 60s was convicted of murdering his neighbor, who was also in his 60s, by setting him on fire after losing the traditional Korean board game yutnori. The Gwangju District Court sentenced the man to 35 years in jail on the charges of murder and breaching the Special Act on Prevention of Insurance Fraud.
It's reported the two men were playing yutnori for money in November last year in Goheung County of South Jeolla Province. When the victim attempted to leave after winning around 1 million Won ($765.34 USD), the suspect poured gasoline on him and set him on fire. Though the victim was immediately transported to the hospital for his injuries, he passed away 4 months later due to the severe burns.
The Gwangju District Court stated the reasoning for the sentencing was the cruel and painful manner in which the man killed the victim. He also failed to come to a reconciliation agreement with the victim's family and claimed the victim had died due to chronic illness instead.
