Singer 'A' has been sentenced to 1 year in prison for scamming his girlfriend.
The September 4th episode of JTBC's 'Crime Chief' covered the story of a singer in his 40s who was sentenced to a year in prison for scamming his girlfriend. It's reported 'A' had defrauded 69 million won ($51,684.62 USD) from his then girlfriend without the intention to pay the amount back.
According to the victim, the two met in 2018 when 'A' was allegedly running a wine bar in Seoul, and 3 months into dating, 'A' asked her for 69 million won, claiming financial hardship. When the couple broke up in 2020, the victim asked for the money back, and 'A' claimed he had not borrowed the money. 'A' stated he had never asked to borrow money, and she had given it to him willingly. When the victim filed a lawsuit against the singer, 'A' then filed for bankruptcy.
The victim later discovered 'A' did not own the wine bar, but was working there as an employee. She further discovered he was cheating on her with a woman who was 15 years his junior. In the process of investigating, 'A' was found to have borrowed 60 million won ($44,952.58 USD) from another woman he previously dated as well.
The court has found in favor of the victim, and 'A' was sentenced to 1 year in prison. He has filed an appeal, and the two are awaiting the second trial.
'A' is said to have debuted in the mid-90s and has since been active as a singer and actor.

If he's been convicted, why isn't his name public? I can't get used to this weird justice system in South Korea, people who have not actually been charged or convicted of anything get their names and faces plastered all over the media, but those who have been convicted of some quite serious crimes are kept anonymous. It's bizarre.
