Singer Jaejoong shocked his fans by referring to his visuals as being "unique" or "distinctive" rather than handsome.
On August 30, Jaejoong was the special DJ for MBC FM4U's '4 O'Clock with Yoon Do Hyun'. Jaejoong has been serving as a special DJ in place of Yoon Do Hyun since August 29.
On this day, one listener commented, "I'm tuning in on the radio show, and you are excessively handsome." Jaejoong felt timid and humbly replied, "I'm not handsome. I have a unique face, not a handsome one."
He continued to elaborate, "I always say this, but I have a distinct face. I'm thankful for the compliments but I don't have a handsome face. I'm happy to hear compliments that I am 'excessively handsome.' I'll send you a gift. Since I can't send it randomly, I'll send you a coffee coupon."
After hearing Jaejoong's response, fans and listeners protested. So Jaejoong emphasized, "Unique is unique. Being handsome is something else. Individuality and handsomeness are different things. I've always kept a distinction between uniqueness and the typical handsome face."
Jaejoong further explained, "People like Won Bin or Cha Eun Woo these days are handsome. I'm just someone with a unique face. I'm not pretending to be humble; I genuinely think that way."
Jaejoong's fans responded, "Oh please," "Oppa, don't make us angry," "Excuse me?" "I'm going to dig a hole and enter it," "Man, people who have it good are the worst," "Does he not know the definition of unique?" "You're the original," and "What is he saying? there are so many people who'd go crazy over his face."
In a way he's right. He is handsome, but not conventionally so. Being conventionally handsome can be kind of bland, uninteresting beyond a basic acknowledgement of attractiveness. Jaejoong on the other hand, has a striking face, so amazing, that SM has gone looking for lookalikes for years. It's a face that leaves a lasting impact, which is why, after all these years, he still ranks as one of Kpop's best visuals.
